I was a little worried when I laid eyes on the box it arrived in, it being larger than I expected. It turns out it's just very well packaged and once removed the NAS itself is about 2.5 times the width of a bare 3.5" hard drive and about 1.5 times the length/depth. With two drives fitted there can't be much room left inside.
You get at the drive bays by removing the front panel - curiously this is held on by a magnet. Not a problem when fitting your drives but if you ever remove the drives with data on them you'll want to be careful not to get the magnet too close to them. You're highly unlikely to actually cause any data loss but better safe than sorry.
There are two drive bays which pull out to fit the drives. These bays are functional, with no anti-vibration measures in place. QNAP makes a point of saying that the HS210 is to be used with WD Red or Seagate NAS drives only. Physically, you can actually fit any hard drive you want, but NAS drives, and the drives in most PVR equipment for that matter, are designed to run continuously, and usually at somewhat slower speeds than the hard drives in your PC and therefore they also run cooler. The NAS enclosure is billed as silent because there are no case fans so heat build-up could become an issue if you don't use the proper drives. Also, it isn't recommended that you stack anything on the enclosure.Read more ›
The HS-210 is a two bay model in the format of a set top box that looks minimilistically gorgeous. It is small, sleek and easily took away amongst your home entertainment kit and being fanless you'd never know it was there.
For an enclosure so beautifully designed and clearly aimed at finding a home amongst your setup it is a curious omission then that the hardware is lacking in media capability and there is no HDMI out. This enclosure is absolutely screaming for HDMI and beefier hardware to make use of their fantastic HDStation media software.
QNAP have seen they way forward in terms of HDStation but it continues to feature mainly on their higher end enclosures. It is here I think that the likes of Asustor may steal a march with their AS2XXTE and above models that feature Intel chips, HDMI out and their own version of HDStation, the Asustor Portal.
The HS-210 features a Marvell 88F6282 SoC which has a single core running at 1.6 Hz coupled with 512 MB ram and is also found in QNAP'S TS220 range. A possible reason for this choice may be the thermal aspect of going fanless. Inside the unit the chip uses the aluminium top cover of the unit as a heatsink so this choice may be necessary to keep heat to acceptable levels.
The HS-210 has a number of connectivity options that are all located on the rear of the device. Alongside the power in and the power on/off button there's an sd slot, rj45 Ethernet port and four usb ports, two of which are usb3.Read more ›
The software side of it is very good, with regular updates and lots of functionality.
To begin with, it's a great looking unit, and exactly as the manufacturers intended it looks right at home with the rest of my home entertainment kit.
It has a brushed metal top, which I assume is there to help with cooling seen as there's no fan, so I'd be hesitant to put it under anything but fortunately for me it's the right size to live at the top of my stack!
Setup was fairly quick and painless compared to some other NAS systems. Just slide in a couple of hard drives - they can be ran as a RAID array or not and after the system has formatted and synced them you're off.
It will take SSD or HDD - I'd have loved to have gone SSD, but compared to the price of WD RED drives it's still too expensive for me.
Access to the drive trays is from the front - just pull the magnetic fascia off and they're there.
Round at the back you've got a couple of USB 3.0 ports, a couple of USB 2.0 ports, a LAN connection and SD card slot.
I'm perfectly happy with most of these been at the back, but it would be nice to have the SD card slot at the side or front so that I can just pop a card in without having to reach blindly round the back.
Whilst I'm on with connectivity, something that other reviewers have said and I completely agree with is - why isn't there a HDMI or audio out?
For this to truly be the hub of my home entertainment, I'd like to be able to hook it straight up to the TV or speaker system. It's not a big deal for me as I have a ...Read more ›

Decent, the heat dissipation works well, but buy the 251, I regret not doing so. The 210 does not have an hdmi connection - and I'd like to be able to hook up direct to tv. Read morePublished 6 months ago by Pithyoneliner
