Enjoy thinking laterally? Then Puzzlebook: 100 Matchstick Puzzles might be just the right book for you! As the Grabarchuk Family states in their introduction to this neat ebook, matchstick puzzles have been around for a very long time―centuries, in fact! However, the authors have rendered such puzzles in a totally new format, by transforming them into a game that is playable on all the different versions of Kindle, including its apps.

In addition to allowing you to visualize the answer in each case, you might choose to play the game using any small, straight objects, such as toothpicks or pencils (apart from the more obvious matchsticks, of course!). Puzzlebook: 100 Matchstick Puzzles should appeal to all ages and levels of expertise, from novice through to experienced player. The puzzles are all clearly graded and carefully organised so that, by merely clicking on one of the named icons that form part of the introduction to this book, you can immediately go to the puzzle of your choice. And you stand little chance of getting stuck, as a hint is provided with each puzzle, showing how you can set about solving it. All solutions are also only a click away.

For math teachers, this ebook promises to be a little gem, as it approaches many conventional geometrical shapes in fascinating and original ways. Among the shapes covered are squares, rectangles, triangles, cubes, quadrangles, octagons and hexagons. What I loved about this collection was the different shapes, in addition to the above, that can be formed from such simple objects. For the animal lover, there is an entire menagerie, including ducks, snakes, rabbits, snails, hedgehogs, little fish, marabou birds, butterflies, cats, and dogs. Everyday objects abound: irons, envelopes, glasses, and jars.

I have other puzzle books from the Grabarchuk family on my modest Kindle 6". They are entertaining and aim to improve our minds. I have enjoyed them immensely.

I bought this book thinking about my coming long haul trip. Sadly, there is a problem with the book. The images of the puzzles are not rendered properly making it hard to read. Moving the controller up and down the screen instead of selecting the different puzzles it merely zooms into the icons. The links at the top of the menu page, i.e. intro, play, credits, etc. do not work either.

I deleted it from the device, downloaded it to my computer and transferred it but still it does not work.

Any ideas on what to do next?

4.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating 29 Aug. 2012

I downloaded this puzzle earlier today. I am still trying to figure out how it is interactive. The book itself has some great puzzles but I could have just bought a "real" book to solve the puzzles themselves with matchsticks. I tried several different websites to see how people were moving matchsticks on their kindle to no avail. Any help?? I am playing on a kindle fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Collection of Matchstick Puzzles 11 Aug. 2012

When I was in high school, fondly remember gathering around the table before classes started and challenging each other with matchstick puzzles. They are fun, hands-on puzzles that can be enjoyed by small groups of people of all ages (as well as solo!). This new book by the Grabarchuks features a large number of outstanding & very creative matchstick puzzles that I really enjoyed and have never seen before. Note that the book will show you the starting picture, and very nicely provides hints, as well as the solution. It does not, however, allow for manipulation of stick elements on screen. BYOM!

2.0 out of 5 stars Loose interpretation of geometric words 23 Dec. 2012
By AngieB - Published on Amazon.com

Normally these kinds of books are fun time-wasters for me when I need something to occupy a few minutes here or there. The authors of this book seem to have a loose interpretation of basic geometric terms. For example, a shape is not always a shape, sometimes it's just a formation of lines. For math sticklers like me, this book could get irritating quite quickly.

If you have ever been on a cruise and wondered how they come up with things to entertain your kids, they have this book. We use this when we are at resturants and this makes waiting for the meals to come much shorter.

This is a very fun and challenging app. It offers game challenges for people who like games but is not so great with the video type games. I enjoy using my mind to figure out puzzles.
