This is a very intriguing story, which drew me in right from the start. Mason Bushing died a year ago from cancer, but now he is back after being held for a year at a secret medical establishment which brought him back to life. You would imagine that, when he finally returns home, his wife and friends would be overjoyed to see him, but not necessarily so. That is what I loved about the book, the way it showed the emotional effect his return has on his wife and friends – one of shock, disbelief and mistrust. It seems that nobody wants to believe him and, after all, he is claiming the impossible and for his wife, Jill, life has moved on. It soon becomes pretty apparent that whatever people on the outside may think, people on the inside want him back and will stop at nothing to recapture him. It is certainly not going to be as easy as Mason thought to start afresh.

I really enjoyed the read and was totally hooked, but with a couple of reservations. At about two thirds of the way through the read the story moves up a gear and heads into new territory, becomes a little James Herbertish. That is not necessarily a bad thing, I like horror and I like James Herbert, although I wasn’t expecting it and my initial reaction was “Oh, it is getting a bit silly now”. However, in hindsight, what transpires does explain away a rather baffling sentence at the start of the book. It just takes the book from a science fiction thriller into the realms of horror and what starts off as something bizarre but, hey it “could” happen, you never know, becomes just unbelievable.

There were a few editing issues that could probably be put right with another read through, mainly it/if, have/had errors and misplaced commas. Not a great deal, but sometimes the writing got a little untidy and I had to read through paragraphs a couple of times to make things clear in my mind. On the whole though, I really enjoyed the read.

Full of fascinating and intriguing premise, this novel is conceptually incredibly strong and full of substance. I find medical conspiracies and experimentation a slant on literature that I don't typically read, and so it was refreshing for me to encounter a story so uncharacteristic of what would be found on my reading list. In a sense this story is a character study about how one man finds himself; slotting into society and discovering his true identity or purpose. With interesting characters and rich details this novel is well thought out and very engaging, as a read that really gets you thinking and reflecting.

PURIFIED

Mason, hero and survivor of death, could cherish his life if it were not for his use as a body for experimentation.
Diagnosed with terminal cancer and assumed dead, Mason is shocked when he is saved as a tool for a somewhat insane Doctor. Questions, accusations, murder and conspiracies...many troubling thoughts swirl around his mind as he awakens in a new world.

The next physical purification of man has come...

What would you think if you were PURIFIED?

This supremely singular, spectacular novel is based on the most ingenious and inspired concepts. Wrought with wonderful premise and outstanding imaginative vision, PURIFIED pushes the boundaries of this genre by taking sci-fi thrillers to a whole other level.
The character of Mason brought to my mind the main protagonist in `the matrix', who similarly is also `in the dark' as to what is happening to the world and to himself. Striped of a former life that was so familiar, I was left guessing in anticipation as to what would happen next and eager to unravel more of the hidden secrets and mysteries.

Purified is about a drug/process that can bring dead people back to life. Dr. Harlow has created a substance that will do this as well as keep them from getting ill again. This drug was used on Mason who had been kept as a prisoner while being experimented on for about a year by Dr. Harlow. The doctor was denied funding for his drug and experiments so was doing this secretly. A year later Mason finally escaped and wanted to go back to his old life but his wife, Jill, had moved on believing him to be dead and collected the insurance money after his death. Mason stayed with some friends but brought trouble to them because Dr. Harlow was trying to get Mason back and in the process commits some crimes that Mason gets blamed for and brings the police after him. The officer in charge of the case was Warren, whose wife had just died. Warren didn't believe Mason's story of the mad doctor and Purify so he thinks Mason is guilty of the crimes.

I was a little confused during the first 20% or so but everything made sense as I kept reading. I am so glad I did. This was a terrific story with an original story line. The characters were very well developed and I was routing for Mason through it all. Even though some of the characters were insane, mean and self-centered, they all helped make the novel unforgettable. The ending was quite a surprise for me and made the story even better.

Since this book was very different from what I normally read, I hesitated to start it. But I am so glad I read this amazing thriller.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. It is definitely a page turner with lots of twists and turns. I highly recommend it.
