The USB and SD connectors are built into one device so you no longer have to carry two dongles. With the iPad Camera Connection Kit, it's incredibly easy to download photos from your digital camera to your iPad so you can view them on the gorgeous iPad display and share them with family and friends. The Camera Connector features a USB interface. Just plug it into the dock connector port on your iPad, then attach your digital camera or iPhone using a USB cable (not included). iPhone 3G is not supported. Use the SD Card Reader to import photos directly from your camera's SD card. Connect it to your iPad, then insert your digital camera's SD card into the slot. After you make the connection, your iPad automatically opens the Photos app, which lets you choose which pictures to import, then organizes the selected photos into albums. When you sync iPad to your PC or Mac, the photos on your iPad are added to your computer's photo library.

On Googling, the problem appears to be down to the OS, so Apple may address the issue with a later build.
having read previous reviews claiming this was only going to work with the USB cable and not the SD card due to OS updates i bought with the full knowledge that this would only work with USB and that was fine with me. When it arrived, today, i thought i would try it out with the SD card just to make sure. To my surprise it worked first time, and uploaded photos and videos to my iPad with no problem. Don't know if this makes a difference but I am running OS 4.3.3 and I used a sandisk extreme 3 card.
Never reviewed anything before but thought it was important to update the reviews here as they are inaccurate and may stop people buying a very reasonably priced gadget that seems to work well
with the connector plugging into the i-pad but aftera few attempts
this item worked fine.
Please note that it displays that the item is not compatable with the i-pad
but it is .
I suggest a small note in the box to tell customers this
I have two cameras - a Canon 50D and a Canon G7 - that I wish to use in conjunction with the iPad. Plugging the Connection Kit into the iPad and then connecting it to either camera with the appropriate USB cable produces no result at all. With the G7 I can take its SD card and insert it into the connection kit and transfer takes place. With the 50D I can remove the Compact Flash card and use it with the iPad via a separate card reader and transfer takes place. It just doesn't work with a direct connection from iPad to camera. Nor does it allow transfer from a USB stick into the iPad as it gives an error message that the device needs to much power.
