I am so enthusiastic about this book. No frills, pure floor exercises well explained. This is a very gentle approach to Pilates without any of the instruments that you cannot have at home anyway (Other books on Pilates have the instruments). The advantage of this book: spiral book-binding that you can open flat, every exercise is explained with a gentler alternative for starters, what the exercise is for (e.g. mobility or strengthening of the spine). For once it does not seem to be uniquely for accomplished dancers, so even I, a little frail one, can envisage to embark on them. You will feel transformed in no time. The very fact that you align your spine correctly (or at least try) will make you feel a new person. I have bought this book for my sister, my parents who where on visit said they wanted a copy too - dad had a broken leg and he thought he might benefit from the exercises. Pilates is just that: To Give You Courage even IF YOU HAVE BEEN INJURED. So TOP star for Michael King presenting Pilates in a gentle way without gadget. Yes this is the book to buy if you want a good grounding in floor exercises Pilates!

Essentially these are floor exercises, with different approach to Lynn Robinsons version of the Pilates exercises - "the way forward". Here not everything starts from the lying position. The warm-ups start from a standing position, which may be better for asthma sufferers like me. I like the sobriety with which all exercises are explained. I like how you are introduced to the principles, with examples to practice in a yellow frame to which you can refer easily. I like the fact that you have the full Pilates exercises alongside a simpler alternative for people like me who are not athletes. The photos (sepia-coloured) are very clear. With this book, you know where you go, and precisely how to practice the floor exercises. The presentation is not flamboyant, but gentle, precise and engaging. You will soon open this ring-binded version by your side and practice the gentle art of stretching yourself into a good posture. This book makes you want to adopt a serious attitude to body structure. Full mark for a lovely book!

At last! A Pilates book that shows you step by step exactly what you should be doing at each stage of the exercise - so many books just have one picture for each exercise, and that's not much use! This book is wonderfully clear and easy to use, and it's all proper Pilates, not glorified body conditioning. Good for Michael King. Oh the binding is good too as it really lays down flat so you can use it as you exercise.

an excellent book, explaining clearly the basic moves for pilates, has a section on pilate breathing that certainly cleared up my confusion. Includes a section on the history of pilates. Very good for beginners, easy to read and understand, lots of pictures clearly showing the moves. Easy to read whilst laying on the floor as it lays flat. A good reference for instructors.

Format: Hardcover
This is a good guide to pilates. The history and philosophy of pilates is clearly and simply described by an British-born pilates instructor. A really handy chart in the introduction maps out exercises to practice at every level. A warm up routine is included and 31 pilates exercises described in pure form and with beginner modifications. It is a good looking hardback book, and the spiral bound pages stay open for easy use. My only criticism is that the execises could be explained more clearly in the text.

I bought this book for my husband (now in his early eighties) who is Pilates fan. He now uses it as his 'bible'. He refers to it regularly to check he is still doing things the right way! This five star recommendation comes from him.

Five stars for the good sense to use a spiral binding. Five stars for clear photographs demonstrating the exercises. Five stars for a concise and focused program. This is a user-friendly publication. I also recommend Lynne Robinson's videos for beginners.
