I currently own a Pure DAB One Mini and use it constantly as a bedside radio so I was keen to see how things have moved on in the five years since I purchased it. To be fair the Evoke D2 is a higher end product than the One Mini but that notwithstanding it's still evident there have been some new developments in the intervening years. The unit is about twice as deep and a third as high as the One mini but still sits comfortably on a kitchen top or bedside table. It looks fabulous. The soft grey wooden unit enclosed front and back by leather effect, detachable covers that come in a range of colours. It sits on two rubberised strips that provide some grip on smooth surfaces.
The front of the unit hosts the display panel, with the usual station identification, track now playing, time and signal strength indicators. There are four station preset buttons with the ability to store up to twenty presets. Volume and channel selection are via two chunky knobs with sound source and menu located on two smaller buttons below the display. The power button is also on the front, although some have mentioned they think the placement is not ideal, due to the potential for pushing the radio over, I found the pressure required to switch on and off insufficient to risk toppling it.
Out of the box it took less than two minutes to attach the power cable, select the language and have it scanning for stations. The scanning was extremely quick and found all the stations I know to be available without any difficulty. Unlike the Mini One The Evoke D2 also has an FM option.Read more ›
The radio has 4 pre-set channels which are easy to set but do clear and have to be re-set once you turn the radio's power off. The radio has a digital display detailing what radio station etc you are on and the time along with the track title being played. The radio/speaker also has timer and alarm functions on it. You can either let the radio autotune to the station of your choice or you can tune manually which is a little bit more tricky but becomes easier once done a few times and not having to refer back the instructions each time like I did! The bluetooth connectivity is very simple and you don't have to do any searching via the radio/speaker itself as it just automatically searches once you turn your bluetooth on on your phone or laptop.
I personally love the design of the radio/speaker as it looks like an old fashioned radio to me and is in my opinion very stylish.Read more ›
It seems silly now that I used to have a separate Bluetooth speaker and DAB radio, when it's obvious to combine the two. But there you have it, and Pure have put together a great looking and sounding product.
As you'd expect it's easy to just plug and play, no hassles or weird problems. I wasn't sure from the pictures but in the hand the radio feels top of line in quality. Nice materials and robustly made. I've only used it for a few weeks but there's no sign of any loose dials or buttons not working properly. The number of radios and stereos I've had that fall apart in no time is absurd, but I can't say that about Pure products.
DAB is similarly easy to set up, and turning to DAB mode automatically starts the tuning process. It also includes an FM radio function, which a lot of cheaper units don't offer.
The sounds is also very good for a unit of this size - it's not the highest quality, but certainly better than most devices of this size that I've listened to. I turned up the bass and treble, which seemed to help a bit too.
It's a great little speaker, and would make a really nice gift or just something cool to treat yourself with.
