Henry Purcell died tragically young, and one can only wonder at what he would have given the world, had he lived longer. What he did leave is a heritage of splendid music with, as it seems to me, its head held high. I have always found his marvellous Te Deum to be especially moving, more so than any other I've heard - Purcell seems to have married the (English) words with the music especially well. The other pieces on the CD are equally enjoyable, the singing and playing is top-class, as is the recording quality. A very worthwhile purchase.

Excellent performances of Purcell choral works. For a two-cd compilation at a rock-bottom price, this is very good value for money. Delivery was prompt.

I fell in love with the Te Deum years ago when I obtained an LP by Alfred Deller, which included a marvelous rendition of Music for a While. Then I bought this performance of the Te Deum, which I don't think has been surpassed. This double album now contains additional anthems and I decided the time had come to replace the previous CD with a second hand copy and it is all as good as I hoped - I can't tell whether the recording has been remastered and improved but anyway it is fine. A recording for every collection.

I remember as a sixth former visiting a couple of friends who had purchased this when it first came out as a lavish 3 lp boxed set in 1981. They played me (I think) the latin motet Jehovah Quam Multi Sunt Hostes Mei. The gorgeous aching suspensions and expressiveness led one of my friends to exclaim, "Oh my God, this is sheer musical pornography!" Since then I have always wanted to hear the whole set and judge for myself.

I now own this recording and can judge for myself.

I must say that Simon Preston and the choir of Christ Church Oxford reached incredible standards of accuracy on this recording which I have seldom heard elsewhere. They also unearth levels of inspiration in music which in lesser hands can sound like mid week autopilot music.

The recording is separated into three distinct areas of Purcell's music for the church. 1. Shorter anthems and motets (accompanied by organ) 2. Canticles (accompanied either by organ, orchestra or unaccompanied) and 3. Verse anthems (accompanied by orchestra and sounding a bit like mini-cantatas).

The anthems contain the music associated with the death of Queen Mary (Man that is born of a woman and Thou knowest Lord, the secrets of our hearts) and the earlier mentioned Jehova, quam multi sunt hostes mei!. The canticles include the triumphant orchestral Te Deum and Jubilate as well as the two sets of Mag and Nuncs (the grand G minor setting and the more modest "short service" one). In even the less inspired pieces, Simon Preston finds much of interest. I never appreciated until listening to this recording the way that Purcell uses the SSA sections against the ATB sections to create expressive contrast.
