This is a heart warming story of two puffins called Peter and Paul who are separated by a terrible storm. Peter finds a big blue whale who wants to help, so Peter describes Paul to him, but he just can't quite seem to get the description right and they find lots of birds but none of them are Paul. Just as Peter is about to give up he spies an island and on it is his friend. So the big blue whale wants to know why didn't Peter tell him that Paul was a Puffin?

The pictures in this book are really colourful with lots of detail that really adds to the story. This makes it easy to discuss the story with little one's when you are reading to them. The theme of friendship is strong throughout as Peter travels the seas in search of his friend. He describes his friend in detail to the big blue whale but they still aren't successful in finding him, the issue could however have been solved by saying that Paul was a puffin in the first place. This is an effective way of showing a preschooler that sometimes it's the simplest way of explaining things that count.

This isn't my favourite of the Greenaway books but I'll still be borrowing this when shadowing is finished to read to my preschooler.

The stunning cover really caught my eye. Matt yellow with a shiny and wonderfully coloured shiny penguin on the front - I just wanted to run my fingers over him! It is the story of Peter and Paul and what happens when Peter gets lost. Peter meets a friendly whale who tries to help. In a simple story of mistaken identity he finds that parrots are not right, nor toucans, nor penguins...but eventually .... The illustrations are stunning and make effective use of collage.

Simple, bright, colourful illustrations perfectly compliment this simple story of two puffins, separated by a storm. Peter has to find his way back with the help of a whale, but each time the whale thinks he's found Peter's friend Peter adds a bit more to the description and of course at the end the whale says "why didn't you say another puffin like you". Shortlisted for the 2012 Greenaway award, this would win my vote, as the text and pictures go hand in hand, and the quirky pictures are something different.

A lovely story about friendship for young children. Paul and Peter are best friends, but one day Peter gets blown away in a storm. A friendly whale endeavours to help him find his way back to Paul. But he just can't quite work out what Paul looks like.

This reminded me of Julia Donaldson's 'Monkey Puzzle'. Each time the whale gets it wrong, Peter gives him another fact about Paul to help him understand what Paul looks like. In their search they travel the world and see various lands and animals.

It's fun to see the whale get it wrong. My son was also concerned for Peter and Paul and their chances of finding each other, he got quite caught up in the story.

This was part of our Bookstart Bear Bag (aged 3), and we were thrilled to discover this book that we had never tried before.

It's a great story, from an author we know, with lovely illustrations and a host of exotic animals to discover. A great toddler read.

Both my children love this book (2 and almost 4)-its easy to follow, the illustrations tell the story and the text just improves it. My two year old has been known to pick it up and 'read' it to herself as she knows the story by heart! Can't ask for better than that!

It's a simple but powerful story with lovely illustrations. However, the storyline was almost identical to a Julia Donaldson book we already have, i.e. Monkey Puzzle.
