Product description

Product Description

Puccini's best-known opera, a tragic tale of love, intrigue and betrayal in Napoleonic Rome, is performed by an international cast including Eva Marton, at the famous Arena di Verona. In Rome, 1800, former consul Cesare Angelotti seeks refuge with the painter Cavaradossi in the Attavanti chapel. Cavaradossi's lover Tosca, however, believes that he has another woman, and betrays him and Angelotti to Baron Scarpia, the chief of police.

I have seen many performances of 'Tosca' in my time, but none to equal this one. It is superb, with wonderful singing from all who took part in the production. Eva Marton is a glamorous and convincing Tosca - her 'Vissi d'arte' is magnificent, emotionally moving and beautifully performed. Giacomo Aragall was probably the best Cavaradossi of the latter half of the twentieth century. His singing is sublime and his acting is exceptional. He brings to life the young painter, and looks good in the role as well as portraying the ardent young lover in a thoroughly convincing way. His 'E Lucevan le stelle' is heart breaking and is the best performance I have ever seen of this aria. Ingvar Wixell is a very satisfying Scarpia - no half measures here, he is pure evil from start to finish and sings the role with emotional relish. The rest of the cast are extremely convincing, and we are even treated to the spectacle of some live sheep on the stage at the beginning of Act Three. The lighting is excellent, and the sets and costumes live up to the high standard of this production.

Stylishly and beautifully performed at the Arena Di Verona this should please all but the most jaded opera lover. A most highly recommended performance.

A truly memorable performance with Marton and Aragall at their best. I was so pleased to find this Verona production on DVD, my ancient Video8 recording was almost worn out. I have numerous 'Tosca's' - older and newer alike - but this version has remained my favourite for nearly 30 years with the film coming in a close second. Marton's electrifying performance is close to being definitive and Aragall's reputation as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century is powerfully underscored.

I had reservations about choosing this recording because I was not familiar with the names of the performers and knew my husband would be sceptical. I needn't have worried. It is spellbinding. The tenor's voice is gorgeous and conveys great emotional depth as does that of the soprano. The whole production is wonderfully atmospheric and utterly absorbing; we were both in tears. (Is that a recommendation?)

Just about everything that be written about the opera 'Tosca' has been. This recording is enhanced by its setting at the Arena di Verona and fulfills what everyone would expect from artistes of the caliber that perform.

My only additional comment is Giacomo (Juan) Aragall is the best Cavaradossi I've ever heard. You will replay 'E lucevan le stelle' again and again.
