Renata Scotto in her prime here as Mimi, and demonstrating why Tebaldi was looking over shoulder in 1961. She is delicate, expressive and beautifully controlled - something she threw out the window in the 70s, when she had a second wave of recordings.

Poggi did not have the finest timbre for a tenor in the 60s: his voice has a slightly cloudy tone, but he does have the top notes for which his voice seems to shift gear (I prefer Gianni Raimondi, who is the Alfredo to Scotto's Violetta on the same label). Nonetheless, Poggi is a passionate Rodolfo and not miscast.

Gobbi was past his prime here and yet an ideal Marcello, which is not the most taxing role. He is always such a strong presence, delivering intelligent phrasing with warmth and colour.

Jolanda Managuzzer as Musetta is slightly disappointing (a late replacement?). She seems to struggle in the role and her voice is a little shrill.

However, as a whole I think this recording well deserves purchasing with comforting support cast members like, Giorgio Giorgetti as Schaunard and Giuseppe Modesti as Colline.

Antonini Votto was a reliable conductor and responsible for some fine recordings (the Callas Sonnambula, Boheme, and Un Ballo in Maschera). The sound of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is always bright and sparkling.

This set has stiff competition but it certainly stands its ground as a worthy also-ran. Four stars, apparently, equates to "I like it" which would be an understatement.
