Everyone who has lived on Earth must know that Psycho is one of cinemas greatest milestones! The story of Marion Crane who steals $40,000 from her employer & flees town. On the way to surprise her boyfriend with the money she stops at the Bates Motel for the night & chats to it's owner, the charming Norman Bates. Realising her mistake she decides to go back & return the money but Norman's mother has other plans!!

Hitchcock's 1960 thriller redefined horror movies. Shot in b&w to give it an atmosphere with the perfect performance from Anthony Perkins as Bates. This film is iconic for many reasons, the shower scene, quotable dialogue, the screenplay, direction & the brilliant conclusion.

Hitchcock's horror masterpiece celebrates it's 50th anniversary in 2010 & gets it's blu ray debut.

Having owned all previous DVD/VHS editions of this classic film one thing that bothered me was that this film was crying out for some treatment. It was beginning to show it's age with grain, blotches on the print, etc. Whilst Universal have never given their Hitchcock films the treatment that Warners do theirs they have certainly pulled out all the stops here!!

This blu ray has a fully restored picture that has NEVER looked better. Grain is minimal, the images are clean, sharp & bright. The sound has been remastered to 5.1 digital sound, you can hear things you never heard before. Listen to the rain pounding the car, the traffic from the road, the infamous score, it's vastly superior to any previous release of this film. The extras are mostly collected from the previous DVD collection, whilst the menu is the same style as most Universal blu ray titles.

Also if you purchase the steelbook edition you get a booklet all about the history of the film.

Very highly recommended.

Psycho is one of the best movies of all time, but not because it's one of the best stories of all time. Alfred Hitchcock's direction is flawless. I think we all know that. What makes this (the Blu-Ray, 50th anniversary edition) a true 5-star worthy buy, is the quality of the sound and picture transfer. It looks as though it could have been filmed only this year. The quality of the picture is flawless and crystal-clear. It's just in black-and-white. The sound is perfect, and sounds nothing like movies from so long ago. It's a true masterpiece of technology that they've managed to do this, and it's absolutely worth the upgrade from a DVD.

Presented on an excellent blu ray edition, this film is maybe disorienting for a contemporary audience because, although it is scary and disturbing, it relies on a genius script structure that needs maybe a second vision to be fully appreciated.
In fact, the great Hitch does two quite revolutionary things:
1) there is almost no music throughout the film, which is quite unusual considering how important music is in a thriller
2) the story is basically split in 2 different parts: the crime and the detection about it (I won't say more had you not watched it yet).

As for the rest, there is not much to add (or maybe too much), except that, after 50 years, I've not found a thriller so unique and masterful in the way it plays with cinema and thriller rules.

As a film obsessive it was becoming frustrating that this is never shown on TV. Have you noticed? I have waited for years for this to be on TV. Eventually I caved and bought the TV after watching a Hitchcock documentary. My grandfather who saw it when It came out, said I shouldn't watch it alone! My mum said it wasn't that good (she does not have taste) Its a brilliant movie for people interested in the film business. Its a wonderful example of how a director/writer/producer can influence movies that still have people "emulating" them today. The more you watch 'Hitchchock' films the more you understand them. A visionary eccentric man was Hitchhock and apart from Charlie Kaufman there are very few like him left.

Writing a review of this film seems pointless, as everything about it is known.
But my God! how exciting it must have been to see Psycho with no knowledge of the shocking event 30 minutes in.

It remains a remarkable piece of work, and features one of the most sinister performances of all time.

Considering this is black and white, Psycho has never been seen in so much glory as it is on this Blu ray release.
Sparkling detail is seen throughout, makes the black and white better, and a thousand times more vivid than any previous form. Even if you only have a 720p HD TV as I have, fear not, Blu rays of this clarity will still stun you to death. I watched this on a 19" 720p TV, and the picture was still absolutely incredible. Far more clear sound has been added, it was very apparent from the beginning, giving Psycho one cracking new makeover to last forever. It tends to make you greedy, watching Blu rays like this, and Zulu aswell, just makes you want to see everything in that standard.

If you ever read any Top 100 Movies of all time, or Top 100 Movies to see before you Die Reviews, this Movie always features! And usually in the Top 50 to. There is a very good reason for this, as it is the First and Best of this style of Psycho Movie. Most Psycho Movies are over the top and ridiculous at best, with to much Crazy Ass behavior from the Nut Job in the Movie. This Psycho however has a realism and point, that by today's standards is still the Best, & most believable also. As with Hitchcock Movies the style and way it is Filmed, Shot, Acted and Flow of the Movie, have Magic that is all of its own. A Great Movie from the Hall of Fame that is a must see!!! For any Movie/Thriller Lover. A Classic Movie & for good reason to.
