About the Author

Ralph Metzner, Ph.D., helped found the Harvard Psilocybin Project in 1960 and is now a psychotherapist and professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is the author of many books, including "The Psychedelic Experience" (with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert), "Maps of Consciousness", "Opening to Inner Light", and "The Well of Remembrance". He lives in Sonoma, California.

Ram Dass began his life as Richard Alpert, who went on to become an eminent Harvard psychologist, where he partnered with psychedelic pioneer Dr. Timothy Leary. On a trip to India, Alpert met his guru Neem Karoli who gave him the name Ram Dass, which means "servant of God." After this pivotal encounter, he became a significant influence on a culture that has reverberated with the words Be here now ever since. Be Here Now is the title of Ram Dass s best-selling book, which many consider a bible on their spiritual journeys. Ram Dass has been a guiding light since the 1960s, carrying along millions on the journey, and helping free them from their bonds as he has worked his way through his own.

This IS Leary`s definitive work. Its an absolutely essential guide book for anyone planning on taking a psychedelic drug.I never read this before my experiences but looking back on them now this book makes sense of the seeming random-ness of my hallucinations and sensations by placing them into three sections of the trip or Bardos ( being based on the Tibetan Book Of The Dying). As John Lennon once said,"Learys method is the only way to trip". Word.

anyone seeking enlightenment or understanding of themselves really needs to read this book. Leary combines the age old scripts of the tibetan book with his own seens of psycadelia to a mindblowing effect. he has a real sense of understanding and sets the facts straight. this book tells you both how to enjoy and deal with a psycadelic experience. anyone interested in eastern philosophy, psychology or specificly enlightenment will love this book. a leary must have!!!

what a book. anyone even mildly interested in the more psychedelic drugs, and the infinite possibilities for mind-expansion involved with them must read this stunner.
Leary relates the freeing of the consciousness back to ancient Tibetan wisdom of life with incredible clarity, pointing out the advantage we now have of being able to 'shortcut' the years of spiritual training and discipline usually needed to attain Nirvana.
even if you don't dabble in drugs this is great introductory reading into ancient Buddhism.

Maybe you need to have had a little smoke or something in the few days prior to reading this ?

Guidance to what to expect immediately after death, and how not to be scared.
Basically, so long as you realise that whatever appears is only, in fact, you yourself, nothing can harm you.
Everything is just different aspects of you. Sorry.

This 'manual' was initially published back in the early mid sixties- i.e. before the hallucinogens were made illegal. My vague historical understanding of the period has Leary and Huxley arguing for the use of L.S.D. but while Huxley supported usage by an elite of creatives, Leary slowly shifted position from limited use in academic research by the therapeutic community to a much broader use by the community at large and a 'revolution in general cultural consciousness'. The book seems to have been written/published midway by Leary and purports to be an invaluable manual for the safe and serious use of psychedelics (to be read and re-read prior usage and remembered during sessions) for spiritual growth. It contains history, theory, detailed description and explanation, positive suggestions for use in terms of dose, set and setting and also includes 'excerpts' of The Tibetan Book of The Dead to help guide those attempting to experience hallucinogens. The general tone of the book is very positive and reassuring. The darker side of hallucinogenic experience is also discussed on several occasions throughout the text with explanation and remedies for them too.

I found the second section, where the detailed descriptions of the Bardos and the experiences which may be expected such as hallucinations, of particular interest but also greatly compromised in terms of clarity by the adaptation/setting for Kindle which is poor. This leads to the text being interrupted mid-paragraph on pretty much every page by page headers. Spacing also seems to have gone out the window so that this section of the book in particular can seem dense and turgid.

Many books have been written on people's experiences with psychedelics. Mostly they have lengthy accounts on how people felt this and felt that, and neither the author nor the ones having the experience seem to understand or to be able to convey clearly what is the logic and messqage of the psychedelic experience.

This book tells the truth clearly. If you want to understand psychedelics, this is the book to read. And if you don't care about psychelics but just want to understand how the consciousness works, go ahead and read it. After all the psychedelic experience is just the normal functioning of the mind with its sensitivity heightened and fluidity amplified by a chemical trigger.
