The Psalter
This is a brilliant read, an even more so as its a first novel. I find it hard to imagine the amount of work that went into this covering two thousand years of christianity the crossover points with jews and muslims, not to mention the growth of the Catholic empire that is Vatican City, fundamentally a thriller with great historical background, I was really drawn into the lives of all of the characters which have been beautifully created, without really trying to hard it raises important issues as well, for me it shows just how easily even our most fundamental beliefs can be challenged simply because of who is telling us the story and how they evolve over centuries, excellent writing by an author I really hope to read more from.
Highly Recommended.

Believable plot, plenty of intrigue, excellent historical references and some great twists. From a religious aspect it opens up plenty of questions about the early Christian writings and what may have been destroyed for the wrong reasons.

Just finished reading the Psalter and have to say my heart was torn between wanting to hurriedly read the book and anxiety to slow dawn and savour every sentence. Full of detail, well written and with an excellent plot. Well worth a go! Very much hope there will be a follow up, if not I will still keep my eye on any further writings by the same author.

"The Psalter" is in the general category of "The Da Vinvi Code", but thank heaven the author didn't go down the road of secret societies at war with a crisis for the hero every other page. I like the way he developed the story by switching back and forth between the Ninth Century where the roots of the intrigues originated and the Twenty-first Century where they played out. He ties the story together at the end rather neatly, so that the present day protagonists learn what they only previously suspected about the Ninth Century back story. I don't want to say more for fear of spoining the story for those that haven't read it yet, because it is well worth reading if you like historical fiction. I would say to Mr. Watson, however, that the writing seemed, in places, to be uneven and could have been improved with the critical eye of a good editor. I certainly will be looking forward fo more from this author.

I enjoyed this book, I liked the way the modern and medieval plots worked together. As another reviewer said, the writer must have done a lot of research.

A mixture of mysticism, corruption and violent ambition set in the modern day Catholic church. One of the most compelling reads that I have found in the recent months. An excellent storyline, well written and a brilliant debut novel.

Well worth reading, an first class unusual novel. I shall make a point of looking out for new titles from this author.

What a thought provoking book this is. An enormous amount of research has obviously been done, then crafted into a rich narrative. Slow yourself down when you read this book, savour every word. As the tale unfolded I was drawn completely into the past and the present worlds. Often in this situation I find myself preferring one era over the other, but not with The Psalter. The transitions between the ages are an example of writing at its best. The Psalter has to have been a labour of love for the author and his care has resulted in an astonishing novel that I will be reading again and again. 10/5 stars from me.

There is a lot of history in this book and I found I was constantly stopping to check terms and facts - which added considerably to my enjoyment. Not essential but it is something I like doing. The author has taken a number of areas of papal history and woven them together to make an 'unputdownable' story. I have learned a lot from this book and my own research based on it. A fascinating and enjoyable read.
