The two copper heatsinks are also the same size (and look different to the one shown in the photo, both in colour - unsurprisingly - and in shape...) That does mean you can't put the wrong one on, but the processor is larger than the RAM, so it doesn't cover the former.
I do like the different material for the 'even numbered' layers though. With the perspex on top, it looks almost gold-like.
If you need a ribbon cable or an add-on board this probably won't fit due to the snug cut of the hole around the Pi header.
The cases came in a white cardboard box which IMHO is adequate protection. Parts inside were individually wrapped. The box had eleduino.com on it which suggests that they manufactured them. The acrylic is clearly laser cut with a logo etched on the base plate. People have mentioned that the third heat sink is clearly for the bottom chip and are correct that the case does not accommodate it. As you can see from my photos I used a step drill to make an 18mm hole in the base plate, accurately and carefully cut using a drill press. Assemble the case over the pi to mark the centre of the chip (score diagonals from corners). This meant I could add the third heatsink (which protrudes out of the case by half a mm when assembled). The heatsinks are supplied with self adhesive ultra thin sticky pads (see photos).
When putting the screws in put them through the top and put the nuts on the bottom. This creates a stand which allows air to get to the bottom heatsink. If you use small washers both sides the screws will only be half way through the long nuts, meaning you could use them to mount the pi to a board or appliance casing (TV?) using your own screws. Hand tighten only.
Out of my ten cases none of them were cracked, all perfect. The worst thing about them was peeling the protective layers off the acrylic. There are five layers with two sides so I took 100 layers off my ten cases!
Two pieces go on the bottom. There is a black piece with cutouts that goes up against the board, on the bottom, and then a large clear piece that is the very bottom.
On top there is a clear piece that goes up against the board, with lots of cutouts. Then a black piece, then a clear piece on the top.
As many other reviewers have said, only two of the three heatsinks can be fitted without cutting into the plastic. The two on top are fine, it is the one on the bottom (for the RAM) that won't fit. Seems fine to simply leave it off.
Remember to take off all the paper on the 5 pieces.
For the money a decent case. But not as well designed as it should be and instructions would help.
The case is ok and I like that heatsinks that come with it. They attach with a sort of foam. I'm hoping its highly thermally conductive as otherwise it makes attaching the heatsinks pointless. 3 heatsinks came with the kit. However there is no space in the case for the ram chip to have a heatsink on it. Since this is the only other chip that could conceivably need a heatsink it doesn't make sense to ship three heatsinks when the case is only compatible with two.
A further gripe is that the screws used while fine for securing through the case to the standoffs their heads aren't very large and put a lot of pressure on the case material. In this situation washers should really be used to spread the load out.
It would be massively improved if:
1. it was fully transparent. Top and bottom parts are transparent but the insert at the top (CPU side) is not and as such from the transparent top I just see the carton cutout. Couldn't this also be made from the same transparent material? It would look far better.
2. The RAM heatsink cannot be installed. Even though the case comes with three heatsinks, the one for the RAM stick (bottom of pcb) cannot be used because the bottom part of the case has no opening for it. As such the RAM get's no heatsink. Why? What's the point of including it if I can't use it?
Appeal wise the case is very nice looking quite smooth and sleek and unlike some other cases i have used in the past it looks nice on the desk. As many other reviews have said the bottom ram chip won't allow for the heatsink without first cutting a hole for it. And the case also doesn't come with instructions but it is very logical on how to put it together.
My final issue with it is the laser etching on the bottom isn't the greatest that might just be a bad batch, but it's only the company logo and web adress anyway
Other than these 3 small minor issues the case is excellent and i would probably buy another one if i had the need too.
