I’ve lived in South London for most of my adult life, not far from Brixton where this extraordinary story takes place. I’m an obsessive reader of crime fiction and psychological thrillers, so this book seemed a perfect one for me to read and review.

Josie Parker, the single mother of 12-year old Georgie and 5-year old Marnie, is an ageing prostitute; some call her a slapper. Coming to the end of her working career, and having fallen into a heroin habit, she’s struggling to put food on the table and money into the electricity meter. Her friend Mandy is in almost as bad a position, though she has no kids to provide for. Delray is their pimp. He’s gone from running one or two street girls to having twenty mostly high-class escorts. He takes more than half of their earnings for “protection”. We actually see the protection in action, when he breaks the leg of an unruly punter with a baseball bat. His only redemption is that he won’t get into selling drugs; though he’s quite happy to live off women, and even move into providing underage girls. Javine is his seventeen-year old girlfriend, whose mother pimped her out, and who Delray is getting ready to be one of his working girls - and so the cycle threatens to repeat.

This is a gritty story which explores what can happen to women in these circumstances. What makes the story a bit special is showing the way that their dependants suffer too. To relieve the nastiness, it’s good that ultimately the girls and women don’t just take everything thrown at them, they begin to fight back. The story is also populated by a set of minor characters who live in the awful environment faced by Josie, Georgie, and Marnie. This world constructed by Casey Kelleher is as elaborate as one for a fantasy novel, and as chilling as in a horror story.

Oh. My. Word.

You know, if you like a warm, cosy crime drama, or something that leaves you feeling all special and fluffy inside… stay away from this book. If on the other hand you like your books with a lot of grit and attitude then this will absolutely be the book for you.

After reading The Taken, I kind of knew what to expect when opening up the first page of this book. Casey Kelleher has established herself as an author very willing to tackle the dark side of human life with a brutal honesty, although without having to be too gratuitously violent that it disengages the reader. The Promise is a really gritty novel; covering subjects from drug abuse to prostitution and dancing around the periphery of child abuse, you won’t find anything here to warm your cockles. Not by a long chalk. Actually… that may be wrong of me to say, but more on that later.

This was a hard book for me to judge just how I felt. There is no denying that Miss Kelleher has an exceptional talent for writing. Far from pushing me away with what could have been a very abhorrent subject, she drew me in from the very beginning. Yes, I did find the subject matter objectionable, and it is a very strange book in that it is hard to feel any real empathy for any of the characters other than perhaps the pub landlord Dave, and the two children Georgie and Marnie, who are caught up in such a tragic story which is beyond their control and beyond comprehension at times.

And yet I couldn’t step away. Not so much because I needed to know that Georgie and Marnie were going to be safe, although that truly did matter to me, but because I was also intrigued by their mother, Josie. Josie is a strange character.

I couldn't wait to read the latest book by this talented author and story writer, and boy I wasn't disappointed.
The main characters are Josie a long suffering woman who hasn't had a break in all her life, she's a prostitute not by choice by necessity, she's also a drug addict who has 2 daughters. Her eldest Georgie is 12 and Marnie who's 4, life for them is horrible but they are so close and Georgie looks out for her kid sister.
Josie could cause a fight in an empty house, she's hard and does anything for a fix. This book is so hard to put down, edge of your seat time. with a lot of it. There are tears, tantrums, a murder or two, right nasty people you will find yourself hating and shouting at. You also get so much from the book too, well I did and I was engrossed from the first chapter. There is a twist but I won't spoil it for others.
If I could have given 6 stars for my review I certainly would have. It's a Fantastic read by a talented author and I can't wait for her next book to be published.

I loved reading this book. Two sisters georgie and marnie parker learn and go through so much at such a young age. A mother josie who tries her hardest to give them a decent life and fails. After josie is arrested the girls get pulled into the evil clutches of delray pimp and marnies father who tries to take control. I loved reading every bit of this book. It had me gripped from start to finish with a fantastic ending with a secret that the girls promised to keep. Well done to the author
