The debut album by Gene Loves Jezebel is a shocking nightmare in the best possible way. There's a real Halloween vibe to the band at this time, both in their look and music. It can be hard for the average listener to distinguish between the voices of twins Jay and Michael Aston, but they are both certainly not your run of the mill vocalists. The shouting and wailing was hypnotic, but there was also a careful layer of Pop sensibility in a couple of tracks that may have helped open doors for future success.

'Bruises' is one of those slightly pop songs with a catchy chorus. The video was clearly very low budget, and I swear there's one point towards the end where you see Jay irritated with Michael and letting him know it before for the miming for the camera resumes. Jay looks like he's hating it. 'Pop Tarantula' is a song that's just shiver inducing with it's horror. The dark beat and the extended guitar chords give me chills, and the vocals are awesome! This could terrify small children. And by that same token, 'Screaming (For Emmalene) is the sequel. The original single version, which is on disc 2, is one of the best Gothic rock songs ever. The wild drumming and the build of the song is all encompassing. And Michael (or Jay?) Aston gets the award for the best scream ever in music, even surpassing Siouxsie in her brilliant re-recording of their B side 'Red Over White', and that was no easy feat. 'So Young (Heave Hard, Heave Ho)' has similar power to 'Emmalene', with a wailing guitar and rapid drumming, along with another amazing Aston scream. It sounds like a small terrified child. This truly is a horror film soundtrack.

There is a little bit of filler on the album.

Unfairly lumped into the Goth craze of the early 80's, this tuneful duo really rocks with this, the first of many great releases. Kind of hard to nail down references, although U2-like guitar is predominant."Aquatic" was a term used to describe this shimmering guitar sound back in the early 80's. The vocals remind me a bit of Gavin Friday of the Virgin Prunes, another band that started out in the early 80's that also has a U-2 reference <U2's Guitarist Edge's brother was in the band>. Strong tunes throughout, a classic of it's time that still sounds great today. What really clinches this deal is the bonus cd, loaded with rare 12" mixes, unreleased cuts, and b-sides to some REALLY rare vinyl singles <this LP came out before cd's>. The "Shaving My Neck" e.p., their extremely rare first single is here, as is,IMHO, their best ever song, the b-side to the "Bruises" single, "Punch Drunk". This song just flat out rocks, and I'm glad to finally have it, along with this entire collection, on cd at last. Eighties rock fans and, well, yes, Goth fans alike should seek this cd out before it slips away. I've found that re-releases like this are labors of love influenced by dedicated fans that surely won't make anyone rich, they are put out because they are too important to be forgotten, and they are good! I'm sure that not a lot of copies are pressed, hence my statement about picking it up quick. Plus, check out the low price - it's a great deal compared to the sludge that's getting cranked out now.
