By I. Giles HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on 7 Jan. 2013
Format: Audio CD
Jarvi's set of Prokofiev recordings covering all the symphonies plus a multitude of additional works was an instant success when issued in the mid 1980's. They have not lost their appeal in the years since.

Jarvi achieved a considerable peak of mutual excellence with his Scottish orchestra at that time and this excellence was matched by outstanding recording quality from Chandos. This disc is typical of that success. The 5th symphony can be rather a heavy or hard driven experience in some hands but Jarvi keeps a light hand on the reins and lets the music and the orchestra sparkle with a nice forward pulse but without undue hurry. There is a palpable sense of corporate enjoyment here. Other favoured recording such as the famous one by Karajan and the fine one by Szell are fine in their very different ways but this recording by Jarvi is arguably the most sheerly enjoyable.

The same bluff humour is apparent in the Waltz Suite which makes for a most enjoyable balletic feast with extracts derived from his stage works. Once more the performance and recording are both excellent.

If this program appeals I would suggest that this disc warrants serious consideration. It is worth mentioning that the box set of the collected symphonies is a particularly attractive alternative purchase but for that you would have to forgo the Waltz Suite.

I will confess that this is the only recording of the Prokofiev 5th symphony that I have heard, so don't know how it compares to any others. But for me this is an absolutely brilliant performance and the recording is absolutely first rate, with that wonderful Chandos bloom. The last movement of the 5th is electric and leaves one breathless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Järvi and Prokofiev 13 July 2008
By B. R. Merrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Prokofiev's orchestrations, like Beethoven's, are naturally heavy. As a composer known for his precocity, the weight of the orchestration is obviously meant as an in-your-face dare. It is therefore important to exploit this fact as much as possible.

Aided by wonderful technical recording aspects, Järvi's interpretation of Prokofiev's symphonies and other symphonic works is unmatched. These recordings with the Scottish National Orchestra contain great acoustic reverberation, ecstatic woodwinds, fiery strings, and blaring brass. If you're a fan of French Horns especially, then you'll love these recordings.

Järvi never loses a sense of playfulness. The orchestra stays together quite nicely, and you may actually have to turn the volume down at times! There are certainly other terrific recordings of Prokofiev's orchestral works. I'm mainly thinking of an old recording of the Fifth I had with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. But why bother? Your search stops here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jarvi is the master of the Prokofiev symphonies 22 Jan. 2012

Sergey Sergeyevich Prokofiev

Symphony No. 5 in B flat, op. 100
Waltz Suite op. 110

Neeme Jarvi
Scottish National Orchestra
Edwin Paling

(Chandos - DDD - 1986)

Jarvi and the Scottish National Orchestra made a fantastic series of CDs of various Prokofiev symphonies and every one of them is a near definitive recording. This version of the Symphony Number 5 is one of the three best even within that series. The Waltz Suite are from three larger pieces: Track 5 is "since we met" from War and Peace, Track 6 is "Mephisto Waltz" from Lermontov, and track 7 is "End of the fairy tale" from Cinderella. All splendidly done. This CD is highly recommended.
This CD deserves Five Stars.

Desert Island Disk. Sergei Prokofiev is one of my favorite composers and Neeme Jarvi is a great interpreter/conductor of Prokofiev's music.
