Slip into something more beautiful. This is the one. I had this on vinyl. To my utter delight I can buy it now on CD too. Previn is musically intimate with Prokofiev as two old friends who've been to hell and back.
As a sound engineer I must say this is the most balanced version I've heard. Other recordings range from badly recorded horns to a complete washover, making the intended delicacy a major washout. Not so in this case. Listen to the mandolin as a fine example of great recording technique. Fabulous stuff. Even if you have a przed version, get this too. You certainly won't regret it.

I rate this as the best recording of Prokofiev's ballet score around. It's warm (you can almost feel the Italian sun) lyrical and finely paced in all sections. Other recordings are too slow, too fast or even dissonant in places. For once, the Mandolin dance sounds like a mandolin is being played and not a balilika! Subtle and beautiful throughout, the tragedy flows unhindered. All you need is Alessandra Ferri dancing Juliet (with any partner) and the experience would be complete!

Try this out for a powerful emotional experience that you'll want to repeat and repeat. André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra were at their best when they recorded this. Don't worry that it is more than just the highlights, you really do want it all.
This is a performance of stunning variety of musical colour, of the complete ballet by Prokofiev based on Shakespeare's famous tragedy. The music combines a very contemporary feel with classical qualities of beauty, depth and musical insight. It vividly depicts love, loyalty, innocence, conflict and heart-break, and all through some great, memorable tunes.

This is without a doubt, along with "Rite of Spring" and "Firebird", some of the most exciting music for ballet from the 2th Century. Prokofiev, who is known for block-like sonorities is at his most melodic and rhythmic in this stunning ballet. And Andre Previn conducts it to perfection.
If you aren't a fan of Prokofiev, this is a good work to start with, along with the magnificent Symphony #5. I never get tired of listening to this ballet--it's one of the most vivid works ever composed for the dance.
