Of course, getting a better camera gives the person you Skype-call a better picture, not you!
It’s heavy in weight so does not fall over like the cheaper web cameras
I bought this camera to use as a microphone for Google chrome. i have added Google speech to my browsers and i can speak out to it.
i have tested about 3 microphones. None of them work from a distance of 2 feet away, but the microphone is sensitive from a far distance and i get 90% on the peak meter. That’s with it turned up at 85% on the control panel
Very good buy.
Software: if using windows vista, 7 and 8 just go to windows updates from control panel and Microsoft will install the drivers and the utility software automatically. Think it will do the same in xp but did not get a chance to test,
i have uploaded some new picture so you can have a better look,
Just plug and play and you are all set to go, windows will update the drivers automatically online and download the software required.
Issue is 720p is not achievable no matter what you try with movie maker... I tried fiddling with it and even contemplated returning it but then i decided to test it with as many web cam software I could get from the internet...
Alas googles forst spat out Debut Video Capture Software!!!
This software gives you the option to change the resolution choose encoding option and there i found my solution...
Now I can record in 720p 30fps efforlessly...
However, the normal video clips are great. The UI is really nice also.
It has has a flexi rubbeer strip that will fit onto most width monitors or laptops
Really like this. Worth paying the extra compared to the cheaper 10 quid version
Overall impressions are quite good, though there are a few minor drawbacks.
Build is very good with a bendy rubber (with metal inside) attachment for putting in on top of a monitor, aluminium casing also adds to the quality feel (don't drop it though you can bend/dent the metal front part)
A quick fire summary after a few years use of these
+ Nice build and a fair price for a "HD" webcam (720p video output at highest res)
+ Sound quality is excellent overall with good tonal pick up from the microphone
+ Video quality is good even in low light (but note the fps) clean and clear and bright even in low light
+ Reasonable still images too
- Video frame rate drops in low light (quite a bit depending on how dim it is)
- Autofocus can hunt in and out of focus (you can turn AF off in the controls)
The stand out part of the lifecam is the quality of the sound it's far and away significantly better than many webcams I've used over the years. Rather than sounding like someone speaking into a tin can it's very much more natural sounding which is important for voice calls (it has noise cancelling too)
Video quality is good but you won't get the smooth fps that you think, it's acceptable for me as I don't use them for anything other than skype and similar software. Lag is an issue on video in low light, but not to the point where I find it hugely annoying, again the frames are just slower than normal fast video footage. The brighness of the videos in low light is also above average here thanks to a faster lens and decent gain up technology.Read more ›
