Product Description

From the Back Cover

This new 7th edition of Pro C# 6.0 and the .NET 4.6 Platform has been completely revised and rewritten to reflect the latest changes to the C# language specification and new advances in the .NET Framework. You'll find new chapters covering all the important new features that make .NET 4.6 the most comprehensive release yet, including:

  • A Refined ADO.NET Entity Framework Programming Model
  • Numerous IDE and MVVM Enhancements for WPF Desktop Development
  • Numerous updates to the ASP.NET Web APIs

This comes on top of award winning coverage of core C# features, both old and new, that have made the previous editions of this book so popular. Readers will gain a solid foundation of object-oriented development techniques, attributes and reflection, generics and collections as well as numerous advanced topics not found in other texts (such as CIL opcodes and emitting dynamic assemblies).

The mission of this book is to provide you with a comprehensive foundation in the C# programming language and the core aspects of the .NET platform plus overviews of technologies built on top of C# and .NET (ADO.NET and Entity Framework, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), ASP.NET (WebForms, MVC, WebAPI).). Once you digest the information presented in these chapters, you’ll be in a perfect position to apply this knowledge to your specific programming assignments, and you’ll be well equipped to explore the .NET universe on your own terms.

I am reviewing the Kindle version. As a Kindle book it suffers from some formatting issues with the tables and diagrams. They are very small on the Kindle screen making it difficult to see. I have to review these on the PC (Kindle app) to read. That is the reason for 4 stars and not 5
The book itself is very good, starts off with an overview of where C# fits in .NET and then proceeds to cover the elements of C# as a language and how the language elements fit into .NET. The style of writing keeps you interested
The following sections then cover .NET in greater detail and how the individual classes can be used.
The book is a very technical book and does not spend time on how to write loops or the benefits of object orientation. Instead it is a book on how to use the C# language in the .NET environment (which can include other operating systems)

It's been some time since I read a book as well written and complete as this. Andrew Troelsen has a knack of teaching something comprehensively without sounding too pedantic. I'd say this is a must read for any self respecting C# developer. Whether you're new to C# or experienced, there's something for everyone in it.

Bought this book on publication day and have not yet been completely all through it.
I have an earlier edition,Pro C# with .net 3.0, and there is a lot of original, but re-worked, material in this edition.
New stuff as well though, including a very small but on Xamarin.
The book is large and heavy, and in my opinion could be split into two smaller books.
Andrew knows the material very well and pretty much covers everything you need to know.
The book is Full of example code that you can enter, or just download from the publisher Web site.

This book is not recommended for beginner programmers, but those who know how to program and who want to know more about C# and the latest version of.Net

Coming from Microsoft SQL 2012 books, where examples in the first chapters included complex code from say 10 chapters later and you couldn't understand anything, I find this book very very well written. It has a very relaxed tone, with small jokes, well constructed examples and of course very interesting contents.
You can even download the exercises as Visual Studio solutions, from Apress website. Very cool!

This book was not at all what I expected or wanted to learn the language, but I learned enough from it to get a C# job so it must be doing something right!
With the release of C# 6 and .NET 4.6 I would not recommend purchasing a now out-of-date textbook, though.

Andrew, this is the best C# book I have ever read. I have gone through a number of books on C# and other programming languages, but none come this close to clarity of explanations, thorough coverage and a well organised approach and flow. I find as I read, many questions pop up in mind, and a few lines later, you answer them. Well done, this is a mark of a true professional.

I enjoyed reading this book. The coverage of C# language is quite in-depth. In addition, excellent introduction to topics like WPF, ASP.NET, WCF. The theory is mixed with many hads-on examples. Quality of text is great, haven't seen any typos or line of code that gave error. Recommend it to anyone who has some knowledge of C# and Visual Studio and wants to get up to date with current technology.

I needed a book to bring be up-to date with the latest version of .net and c#, this did the trick. The concepts are explained really clearly and surprisingly it had zero errors!

The code in the book can be typed directly into your .net compiler or downloaded from the Apress site. The author uses Microsoft's compiler, he does discuss others at the start of the book. For those that are using visual express, there are some functions like the class designer that is not shipped with the free edition so you won't be able to practice that functionality but it's really not a issue.
