Wellesley Tudor Pole was a man of impeccable integrity, devoting his life to the search, attainment and practice, first and foremost, of ultimate truth. This is clearly reflected in his books and in the way he conductged his life. An army Major and an Officer of the (Order of the) British Empire, OBE, working at one time for the Directorate of Military Intelligence in the Middle East, and founder in collaboration with Winston Churchill and with the approval of King George, of the silent munute, uniting, during the second world war, the British people at nine o'clock each evening at the chimes of Big Ben on the radio, and eventually instrumental in the establishment of the present day Remembrance Day observances - just a few of his remarkable achievements - clearly a man of great compassion, conscience, goodness and morality.
Able to write a book of deception and untruth? That is for you to discern, but after reading this little masterpiece of spiritual guidance and inspirition I have little doubt of your opinion.
As clearly stated, a few months after his death, the book began with the first part of Private Dowding's message at 9pm on 12th March 1917, the year of its first publication, and then went on to undergo seven reprints, but the significance of its contents are as clear and important today as they ever were and always will be. With reference to the book's authenticity I quote Wellesley T.Pole's own words from the beginning of the book (page27) ;
'It is not easy to believe that I have imagined the whole of this experience; that Private Dowding is a figment without reality. This explanation is possible. I do not wish to brush it aside lightly, but it does not appeal to me. I can but record the experience as it came to me, and let my readers judge.'
And on the same subject in the words of Private Dowding but much later in the book (Page 58) while incidentally expressing the challenges of his present state;
'It was very difficult for me. It still is. Oh, my friend, I have much to learn - I have gone such a little way since we met last? I am glad to be allowed to speak to you again. Never mind if people tell you that 'Private Dowding' has no existence outside your own imagination. It does not matter. The message matters, fragmentary though it is. Give it and leave the rest...'
And what a magnificently important contribution to spiritual awareness it is! And so while leaving the closing words to Private Dowding, I leave the rest for you to discover.
'One great truth has become my constant companion. I sum it up thus: 'Empty yourself if you would be filled.' . . Private Dowding.
With peace and love,
