Product Description

Review

The authors have come up with what is both a reference work that can be consulted for factual information and also a mine of practical background material that is informative as well as highly readable. 'Unputdownable' is not a word you'd expect to find in this context, but it's hard not to read beyond what you originally opened it for. The Artist

This is a lovely book and real appetite whetter for anyone interested in making prints. Superb examples, including work in progress as well as some wonderful finished pieces. It is very inclusive, covering relief printing, mezzotints, etching etc and for this reader at least makes one keen to try as yet undiscovered approaches. However, if one is reasonably 'au fait' with a particular technique, reading the relevant section in this volume reveals that each is not exhaustively covered: one would need to read a much more detailed manual to feel reasonably clear of the processes, so in that sense not quite as 'biblical' in proportions as the title implies. Nonetheless, a very inspiring book! (If only I could afford a rocker so I could have a crack at the velvety delights of mezzotints.)

This book was a disappointment. It covers every aspect of printmaking in a not very large volume, and therefore is very skimpy in some of the areas. The various types of etching processes are well covered, but the section on screen printing for example is brief in the extreme. You would not be able to learn enough from scratch to be able to start, it is not a 'how to' manual. Anyone wanting to start printmaking would be better off getting a book that specialised in one process and went into it thoroughly.

Format: Paperback
Everything in one neat and tidy book. Processes, techniques, samples of work. This book covers relief printing, drypoint, engraving, mezzotint, etching, lithography, screen printing, ink, viscosity printing, collagraph, monoprinting and software in some detail. It tells you what each process is, the materials needed, methods and processes. It gives tips and each section is adequately illustrated with numerous finished works. You can also see 'work in progress' photos. This is excellent for anyone who wants to explore several areas of printing methods. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.
