Book Description

Principles and Practice of Surgery is the surgical companion textbook to the international medical bestseller Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine. It is a comprehensive textbook for both the surgical student and trainee, guiding the reader through key core surgical topics which are encountered throughout an integrated medical curriculum as well as in subsequent clinical practice. Although sharing the same format and style as Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine, this text is complete in itself, thus enabling the student to appreciate both the medical and surgical implications of diseases encountered in surgical wards.

  • A three-section textbook of surgical principles and regional clinical surgery.
  • Superbly presented with line drawings, high quality radiographic images and colour photographs.
  • Presented in similar form to its sister textbook Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine.
  • Full online text version as part of Student Consult
  • The contents have been restructured into three sections – Principles of Perioperative care, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Surgical Specialties.
  • Two new chapters have rationalised and amalgamated information on the Metabolic response to injury and Ethics and pre-operative considerations to avoid repetition.
  • Throughout the text has been altered to reflect changes in understanding, evidence and practice, and to keep the contents in line with undergraduate and postgraduate surgical curricula
  • A substantial number of new illustrations have been added to give better consistency and improved image quality.
  • The evidence-based revision boxes that focus on major international guidelines have been thoroughly updated.

Product Description

"Principles and Practice of Surgery (6th edition) is a concise yet comprehensive source of general surgery aimed at the medical student who is seeking more than just the "generic knowledge" required as well as the junior surgical trainee who wants to consolidate their knowledge base. The sound and up-to-date structure of this edition, with each chapter written by an expert in the field, offers a nicely readable, beautifully illustrated reference. What is particularly appealing are the EBM (Evidence Base Medicine) boxes, which provide the reader with the much needed information in a bullet point format to compliment the text. This feature does not interfere with its readability; an almost unavoidable inconvenience that exists in medical literature."

British Journal of Surgery, October 2012

I have the principles of medicine book and really liked it so I thought this would be a good addition. No complaints. I am a nursing student who wants to be informed and this book has not let me down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Undergraduate surgical textbook 29 Nov. 2012
By Ben
A perfect companion to Davidsons Principles and Practice of Medicine, this title of the same series provides all the surgical knowledge necessary for an undergraduate. It is a remarkably easy read and the text flows well. The information is presented in a logical manner and is succinct but provides enough depth to ensure you will not have to consult another text.

Illustrations are well used throughout the text to demonstrate procedures and anatomy, pictures of many of the conditions are also provided. Clinical imaging such as CT scans and plain radiographs provided alongside the text will help you in both exams and on the wards.

A feature I greatly appreciated was the links to current evidence integrated throughout the text, EBM (Evidence based medicine) boxes provide an excerpt from the study as well as full details so it can be accessed if you wish to read more. This is particularly useful as there is an emphasis to a greater degree than ever before to practise evidence based medicine, and knowing the studies which management is based on will certainly help you upon questioning by your seniors.

In summary a concise surgical text for the undergraduate containing everything you need to know for finals.

Worth getting it as a medical student as we are in the process of learning surgical topics. It is a good complementary companion to the sister volume.

This is an excellent textbook at a very reasonable price. I would think that this text is ideal for medical students and GPs who are revising surgery, for whatever reason.
