Format: Paperback
Pop Star Princess is part of the Princess Poppy series of books for young readers by Janey Louise Jones. It consists of 10 chapters plus an introductory chapter for another book. The chapters are generally around 7-8 pages or so long with the last chapter being the longest. The chapter length makes for an appropriate time to spend reading with a young listener or for a more advanced reader to enjoy by themselves. There are illustrations scattered throughout the story which help to visualise the characters.

The plot of Pop Star Princess is about an impending talent show contest. Poppy teams up with family and friends to put forward their song Chocolate Sundae Girls for the judges and audience to enjoy. Poppy is one of the younger characters and she seemingly looks up to the bigger girls she performs alongside.

There are few characters of note in the story but there are a couple of gems. The most tenderly drawn is the Grandpa character who is clearly a family member deserving of much affection and has an amusing rivalry with his old friend the Colonel. In the main the family and friends of Poppy are all supportive of one another and do their best to resolve the problem that arises. There is not much in the way of nuance or differentiation between most of them but they as a group they are friendly and comforting for a young child to read about.

The moral of the story is clearly about lying. Villain of the piece is clearly Lilac. Her naughty move to try and steal the Chocolate Sundae Girls song and then more importantly her lying about it is an easy way for a young reader to spot a baddie. This is a gentle story though so ultimately the good guys feel sympathy for Lilac and she does do her best to make amends.
