It is more or less accepted that the "Sign O The Times" album represented the pinnacle of Prince's career, with its blend of songs and music styles. The level of creativity it reached has yet to be met by the diminutive one.
On its original (cinematic and video) release this film was more or less declared to be the "Greatest Concert Film" ever made. And so it is. Prince and his 1987 entourage whiz, slide, jump, bounce and sleaze around the stage during the 14 songs covered. There was a new energy at work in Prince's live shows at this point, having recently ditched his Revolution band the year before. For fans new sidekicks and cohorts were introduced, with Shelia E now on drums, Boni Boyer on keyboards and supporting vocals and the frenetic Cat (Glover) providing enough bump and grind for everyone.
So its a treat to realise that with this DVD release the sound and picture have been brought right up to current day standards. This is no small feat given the age of the material. The sound is fantastic, mixed into Dolby Digital 5.1 format, which will give your surrounds and sub woofer a good work out.
Essential for Prince fans.
Perhaps someone will see fit to do a similar job on the following years Lovesexy Live concerts?

This is without any shadow of a doubt the best performance from one of the world's greatest performers. Prince has made a few suspect incursions into the world of film in his time but this is where he belongs: on a stage making music. There are a few set pieces that are truly inspired including the medley of Forever In My Life/ It and the room-shaking Housequake but there are also a few Over-The-Top montages that the Pint-Sized Purple One is prone to (but you gotta love him for those too).
Other highlights include the formidable I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man; You Got The Look; If I Was Your Girlfriend; a cool cover of Charlie Parker "Now’s the Time" and a swift rendition of his classic Little Red Corvette.
Arguably his best album, already stormingly great on vinyl have a new life breathed into them.
Magic.
Go buy it.

Well go on then.

One of Prince's Finest Performances - Second Only to Purple Rain.

It's a brilliant concert, however, we forget that we didn't have HD TV back then, so the whilst the music sounds great, the picture quality isn't anywhere near today's hi-res standard.

However, it's still brilliant to watch if you're a Prince fan.

I went to see Prince this past summer, but I had to keep reminding myself that I would not be seeing the sign of the times concert and that it wasn't 1987. Nothing will ever top this, It's just unbelievable. Prince and The Cat, (Cathey Glover) share an amazing chemitstry that can not be beaten by Mayte, Diamond and pearl or any other of the female stage side kicks he has had in the past. I urge any one who does not own this to purchase a copy immediately as you are missing a classic historical performance. In My opinion some of the best performance's are "I could never take the place of your man", "If I was your girlfriend","Forever in my life" and "Its gonna be a beuitiful night".

Up there with the three best concert films ever: Talking Heads 'Stop Making Sense', the Band 'The Last Waltz' and, here, Prince 'Sign of the Times'. Breathtakingly brilliant. HOWEVER, this transfer is not remastered, in fact it's not even cleaned up in any fashion for DVD; it's a direct copy from the old VHS, flogged by a company in the Netherlands. Why Prince allows this to happen is anybody's guess - but why this isn't out on Blu-Ray is also anybody's guess. While we're waiting for justice to be done to this most amazing of concert films , if you want the REAL remastered DVD, go to Amazon Canada, as other reviewers have already pointed out. You'll be jolly pleased you did. The version sold here is a travesty.

This dvd just cements prince as the undeniable legend that he is. He bounces around the stage with endless energy and fun. The chemistry between him and Cat is electric and how brilliant is Sheila E?!?!?! And of course, the songs are amazing, I loved it!!!

Because of the likes of 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man', and 'U Got the Look', Prince's heavily-synthesized double LP from 1987 - Sign 'o' The Times - is regarded by many smart people as the pint-sized pop star's best LP. Despite not performing well in the States when it was released, similar things are said about this concert film, which was written and directed by Prince himself. Seeing the tightly-choreographed opener 'Sign 'O' The Times', and the irresistibly funky 'Housequake' - on which he manages to out move James Brown whilst sporting a cropped salmon pink suit - suggests that they are on to something.

But it feels like a self-aggrandizing overstatement to say it is it "the greatest concert movie ever made", up there with Jonathan Demme's sleek Stop Making Sense and Martin Scorsese's elegiac The Last Waltz. It is about as authentic as Tin Lizzie's Live And Dangerous. Why? It was originally intended to consist of live material filmed over four nights in 1987 in Rotterdam and Antwerp. However, the footage from these concerts was deemed unsatisfactory, because of technical difficulties. Consequently, the live performance was reshot at Prince's Paisley Park Studios. (According to saxophonist Eric Leeds around 80% of the final film was actually drawn from the Paisley Park reshoot.) That has resulted in a film that was obviously assembled in a hurry, and its seams show. Perhaps that was behind the decision to intercut concert footage with brief dramatic sketches featuring Prince, and his large backing band, performing in front of a seedy downtown stage set.
