This book, though very good, is a compilation of all the stories
concerning John Christian Falkenberg - Falkenberg's Legions , The Soldier , Go Tell the Spartans and the Prince of Sparta - rising from ensing in the Codominium Navy ( the political merger of the USA and the USSR that rules Earth and some colonies ) to the best mercenary in the galaxy and finally , though not clearly specified, to Lord Protector of an entire planet.
Military science-fiction at its best.
If you have missed them you should buy it, but if you already
have them on independent volumes you are not missing anything.
If you are not familiar with Johnny Christian as his troops call him, do buy it, you will really enjoy it.

This is a good story of sociological SF -well, it is a collection, really- and one on the serious side of SF at that; this is a light reading (if you do not count the pagenumbers) to enjoy for fun and a somewhat serious reading if you want it to be. On the whole, one step above your usual good bad book. You can think over it, not just fantasize. I understand there are many fans of this author, if Amazon's prices are of any guidance, for I have seen prices up to £200 and more for the same book that did cost me only £15. I'd like to thank again the seller powellbookstore not only for the affordable price, but for the immaculate condition of the book also.
If you did read the Pournelle-Niven novels, you may regret Niven didn't co-wrote those. I did regret that.

Great book - would easily have given it 5 stars. However, the edition I received of this (hardcover printed 2002) has a print error. (Kind of hard to explain so please bear with me)

Pages 1-56 are utterly normal, but what should be page 57 is page 25. It then repeats pages 25-56, then jumps to page 89. So pages 56-88 are missing. Not a huge problem, since the Baen Free library has a preview of the first 20 or so chapters online for free, so I didn't miss anything.

Other than that, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
