Review

If one were to assign a single edition of Machiavelli's works, this most certainly would be it (John. P. McCormick, Professor Of Political Science, University Of Chicago )

Everyone should have a copy of Machiavelli's The Prince, whose original purpose may have been to counsel Renaissance rulers in the art of statecraft but is still applicable to and, indeed, acted on by modern politicians and power-brokers (Guardian )

A 16th Century handbook of wily political thinking that tells you how to get the upper hand in every conceivable situation (Mail on Sunday )

How amazing, that anyone's ideas should be controversial after five centuries. Machiavelli expressed a certain attitude to power - it's a good thing, and the problem is how to get and keep it - so well that he has never become out dated (Guardian )

One of most influential books ever (Mirror )

Book Description

A refreshingly accessible new translation of this timely and dynamic classic work about the corrupting effects of power

FROM THE AWARD-WINNING TRANSLATOR PETER CONSTANTINE

Answer - very carefully.
Started this not knowing what to expect. Machiavelli is always quoted as the master of the dark arts, but what form would his book take? It turns out to be an exposition of how different types of rule are introduced and maintained, with copious examples from the current (around 1500) Italian states and from previous history.
How much of this is relevant today? You'd think not much, but reading it at the time of the EU referendum and subsequent changes to the main political parties, quite a few points of advice did strike a chord. Example- he advises a ruler who has just gained power to carry out any eliminations and potentially unpopular measures at once, to get the bad news over with before dissent has taken hold. What did Theresa May do as her first act - a major Cabinet purge of Cameron adherents. She must have read the book!
Admittedly I rather glazed over on some of the details, though if you are interested in the history of that time it is quite illuminating on who was plotting against who. Heavy going for a casual reader though.
The translation flows quite freely and is very readable. However, some paragraph separations would have eased the eye, and footnotes in mid-page are quite distracting.

Enjoying it so far, but my guess, from the sentence structure and choice of words, is that the translations are too literal and not perhaps put into the best English context, consequently I sometimes find myself having to read the same paragraph several times
