Product Description

Product Description

The second of this successful police drama serial. Helen Mirren revives her role as DCI Tennison, called in to head an investigation into the death of a young black woman, whose body is found in the back garden of a house in London. As she begins to investigate, she finds that she is having to deal with a whole web of issues surrounding racism and sexism within the police force, as well as tracking down a killer still on the loose.

From Amazon.co.uk

In Prime Suspect 2, Helen Mirren's ballsy woman detective chief inspector Jane Tennison is assigned to head a racially charged murder investigation in a largely African / Caribbean neighbourhood. It's politics as usual in the image-conscious organisation, so the superintendent adds to the team black detective Robert Oswalde (Colin Salma), a sharp but hot-headed investigator who has just broken off an affair with Tennison. Now she has to grapple with her own conflicting feelings while fighting political and public-relations battles both in the media and within the police system itself as she investigates the labyrinthine case.

Given scant clues left to sift, a prime suspect who's almost dead and divisions in her own team that result in a devastating death, Tennison soon begins to suspect she's been hung out to dry by the department. Screenwriter Allan Cubitt dives into the murky waters of volatile racial and social relations to create an even more complex and compelling mystery in Tennison's second appearance and Mirren rises to the challenge to explore the contradictions of an uncompromising cop in a compromising position. --Sean Axmaker --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Helen Mirren returns as DCI Tennison in this complex psychological police thriller. A body discovered under garden paving slabs initiates a murder investigation, but difficult race-relations and deeply buried family secrets impede the inquiry. Sharp scripting, cinematography, and editing propels the narrative forward, with the excellent cast (standouts are John Benfield as Detective Superintendent Kernan and Colin Salmon as Detective Sergeant Robert Oswalde) moving easily from tense, procedural scenes to emotionally fraught climaxes and confrontations. And Mirren, whether interviewing a dying man at his bedside or arguing with a spurned lover, is magnificent as the constantly harassed detective. A classic.

We knew we were going to enjoy seeing ALL of the Prime Suspects when we ordered them, so we bought the box set.

We found we had FORGOTTEN what happened in the ones we had seen, and were flabergasted at how good Helen Mirren and the stories were as we worked through all 7 years.

We are big fans of '6 Feet Under' and can report that this is the British equivalent in quality in every way. However, whereas 6FU was an 'ensemble cast', Helen Mirren holds Prime Suspect together like Super glue!

Please DO NOT buy each year individually, just get the WHOLE set in one go in the box, you won't be disapointed - it is unmissable

This is possibly even better than the Prime Suspect 1. DCI Tennison has to find a murderer when the body of an unknown teenage girl is dug up from a suburban garden.

The theme of tensions between the Afro-Caribbean community in London and the Metropolitan Police is added to the mix of Tennison's personal life and police politics.

There are some unforgettable scenes, such as when the distraught mother of another missing girl identifies all the items found with the body as belonging to her daughter, as well as Tennisson's own watch that she surreptitiously puts on the table.

A particular highlight is a magnificent sequence lasting about half an hour that starts with a deathbed confession and ends with tragedy in the police cells. I can honestly say that this was one of the most gripping pieces of television I have ever watched. At over three hours the writer and director have the time to reveal the plot twists gradually to have maximum effect on the viewer.

The acting is again superb. Helen Mirren is brilliant, as are all the supporting cast. Tennison is almost an anti-heroine. She makes no secret of her desire to climb the promotion ladder in the force and her personal life is a mess. However she is a superb copper, using her gut instinct as well as the detective work of her team to get to the bottom of the grisly murder.

Needless to say I can't wait to watch the rest of the complete Prime Suspect box set.

I have the whole series but this disc was playing up as we've watched it so often so bought a replacement.
I think Helen Mirren is a brilliant actress and though this is somewhat dated i still think it's great. Well worth the money.

Prime suspect 2 is Helen Mirren at the top of her game. The body of a young girl is found buried at a house and it looks like the body had been there for awhile, meanwhile Tennison is having a fling with a black detective which causes some problems in her life, lots of suspects in this case and it will take awhile to figure out the murder and other things that go on in this one,it's well worth your time.
