I don't often purchase Jazz outside of 50/60's Bop, but given the sometimes iffy audio quality I will occasionally dip into more recent (if you can call 2005 recent) recordings. I've quite a number of early Kenny Burrell albums, but nothing contemporary as like many of the original boppers he ended up in the jazz funk brigade. So this was a revelation - its contemporary Jazz of the highest order, with a a great line up of musicians, and very well recorded. Very intimate sound, almost feels like the band is in the room. Will be a regular late night disc for a while.

HASH(0x92d81bb8) out of 5 stars Late night jazz - a hidden jem 28 Mar. 2001
By David Terrar - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This album is cool, late night, bluesy jazz at its best. I do not understand why Hip Bop Records did not brand the superb collection of artists on the record as The Essence All Stars, as it follows in the same sequence as Essence of Funk, Afro Cubano Chant or Jackies Blues Bag from the same label. Consequently it is often filed under various artists, and missed by potential buyers - don't make that mistake! Whether it is the super cool version of Oliver Nelson's classic Stolen Moments or the Lenny White orginal Uno Dos Dios, the arrangements, the solos and the playing are uniformly excellent. Lenny produced the album, which is recorded very simply "live" to two track with no overdubs. This is buried treasure - a hidden jem which always puts me in a good mood after a long hard day at work. Don't miss it.

HASH(0x977b4954) out of 5 stars "keepers of the jazz flame ~ Essence All-Stars" 20 May 2005
By J. Lovins - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This seven track collection of - "Essence All-Stars: Primal Blue", features do you dig it "Tasty" indeed top of the heap selections...a collection of stay up late all night jazz peppered with rhythms and percussion that hits you right in the gut.... A musical hybrid that's at once cool & smooth, yet hot & spicy... covers for the most part what this album is about, but don't stop there, you're about to take a journey into the coolness of what jazz is all about...recorded in April 1995 at Ambient Recording Company, Stamford, Connecticut...with a gig to keep your tastebuds satisfied.

The entire CD is awesome from start to finish, with stand outs and highlights... with a haunting arrangement that lingers for days "PRIMAL BLUE" (Kenny Burrell), "DEAR RUTH" (Cedar Walton), "STOLEN MOMENTS" (Oliver Nelson), YOU GO TO MY HEAD" (Coots/Gillespie) "UNO DOS ADIOS" (Lenny White) smooth jazz is a tall order and Kenny Burrell (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), Tim Hagans (trumpet), Craig Handy (tenor sax/soprano sax), Cedar Walton (piano), Lenny White (drums) fill it with melodic ingredients and then some..."BASS BLUES" (John Coltrane) and "FOR TODDLERS ONLY" (Ron Carter), has the rhythm and tempo you can't get enough of.

Our friends Reynold da Silva and Yusuf Gandhi (executive producers), Lenny White (producer) at Silva Screen Records and Hop Bop keep the standards high with wonderful material superbly suited for this CD, with some of the best artists of today being featured...can't stop listening to the All-Stars with that touch of Essence...just the way we like 'em!
