I came across Sam Baker just by chance, whilst half listening to the Bob Harris show on Radio 2. His slightly faltering voice is beautiful to listen to and the lyrics are heartbreaking. I just love this album.

With his gruff, half-spoken, half-sung delivery Sam Baker can't escape comparison with forerunners like Kristofferson, but it's a comparison he can stand. Baker's story songs are simple and direct lyrically but not simplistic or banal, with uncluttered and sympathetic support from his band and guests. Baker weaves in quotes from older musical sources to good effect, 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' on 'Orphan' and Stephen Foster's 'Hard Times Come Again No More' sung acapella by the excellent Chris Baker-Davies at the beginning of 'Odessa' a dark morality tale of the corrupting effects of easy money. 'Psychic' tells the song's protagonist "...it's time to choose, choose between lies, or you can choose truth, but you've got to decide..." as the hard edged guitars build a sense of foreboding and the knowledge that this choice will carry a cost. 'Days' is an impressionistic half-Spanish hymn celebrating good food and drink with friends and family, intoxicated with the moment, finding transcendence in the midst of the ordinary.

'pretty world' is an album worth spending some time with.

Sam Baker's Pretty World is wonderful. Although the lyrics remind me of John Prine at his poignant best, the music is definitely not pure country. His vocals are understated and at times he almosts "tells" his story, talking rather than singing. The music is sparse, simple and beautiful. I cannot listen to this CD enough. Buy it!!!!!

I only heard of Sam Baker this week through a doctor who had heard him from Bob Harris' Radio 2 programme. He suggested I look him up and I have been listening to no-one else ever since. Some people have said that his voice takes some getting used to but I didn't find this to be so. Mind you I like Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart so...
The emotions are raw and on the surface which is uinsurprising once you look at the man's back story. What is surprising is that there is no self pity even on the exquisitely beautiful and deeply painful 'Broken Fingers'.
All I can say is that you should buy this album and the other two as well 'Mercy' and the most recent, 'Cotton' and then listen to them a lot. I have not been so emotionally and intellectually blown sideways by a bunch of songs since the first time an enlightened teacher played me 'The Songs of Leonard Cohen' back in 1975 when I was just 16. Listening to these songs is a bit like the first time you read 'The Hollow Men' or 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' by T.S. Eliot; if you have, you'll know what I mean and if you haven't, please do.
Nothing I can say can do justice to these wonderful songs. Forget genres. Forget comparisons. Just buy the man's work, listen and then pass it on.

A laid back style, good songs, lyrics with a meaning, and great musicianship.
Just excellent. There aren't many albums that I look forward to listening to, but this (and his other album Mercy) is one of them.

If you want electronic drums, rapping, dance beats or samples - forget this album. If you want to bring out the best of a glass of wine and a quiet moment - this is the one for you!

From time to time you read a book Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" a film "The Third Man" and you know that you will still be reading and watching them for the rest of your life.First time I heard "Pretty World" this had the same affect.I loved "Mercy" but this second record is well,I struggle to find words to say just how mutch I LOVE it.Last time any record had the same affect was "Live at the Old Quarter" by Townes Van Zandt.Enjoy it.

I was given Pretty World by my husband who said it might take a bit of getting used to. Not one bit. As soon as I heard his voice I knew I would love this album, and I do.
The only down side was beacause I had listened to it so much I couldn't get the songs out of my head and at 3 in the morning to have Broken Fingers going round and round your head it's enough to drive you crazy!
But I still absolutely love this album.

Thoroughly enjoyed this album. Went to see Sam Baker in Belfast last month. I now have all his albums. He relays his songs with a great Texan voice, full of feeling and emotion. Can't wait to hear more.
