About the author

Simon Morton’s early career as an executive for an international technology company exposed him to more PowerPoint presentations than was good for him. A lesser man may have crumbled, but Simon opted for the ‘poacher turned gamekeeper’ approach and decided to do something about it. In 2004 Simon founded Eyeful Presentations with two aims in mind; ridding the world of ‘Death by PowerPoint’ and enjoying a relaxing, self-employed, family future.
Unfortunately for Simon (but jolly good luck for businesses everywhere) he turned out to be rather good at not only the design stuff but the storytelling stuff too. Nine years, two children, hundreds of very happy customers and five international offices later, it all seems to be going rather well (if not exactly to plan on the relaxation front).
2014 sees Eyeful providing presentation perfection in the USA, Europe, the Republic of Ireland and Russia – all orchestrated from the UK Head Office. Simon references his Presentation Optimisation methodology aligned with his Blended Presenting approach as the key to Eyeful’s success.
Simon's first book, 'The Presentation Lab: Learn The Formula Behind Powerful Presentations', shares the insight that has allowed Eyeful to make such a big impact in the art of business presentations.
It is due for global publication by Wiley in English and Spanish in early 2014.

Anyone should be able to improve their presentation overnight by reading this.
Highly recommended.
I have no idea what Simon will publish next, but it will be on my pre-order list.
I have spent my whole professional life giving ‘presentations’ – as a teacher, lecturer and in business. Anyone who has to spend a significant portion of their lives giving information to other people will find a mine of helpful detail in this book. Some of the material can be found in any authoritative book on management techniques – few people get to be real managers nowadays (as opposed to simply having a morale-boosting but vacuous title) without having staff to control and instruct, either formally or informally. Any teacher-training course will also include some of this material.
As I read through this, I was struck by the fact that even as a writer I would have found this book helpful if it had been available to me earlier in my life. The emphasis, as might be expected, is on presentations given in a commercial business environment using PowerPoint – but many lecturers I have had to listen to would have benefited enormously (or at least I and the rest of the audience would have benefited enormously) if some of the basic principles given here had been followed. There is however no instruction on how to manipulate PowerPoint itself – that can be found in other books.
As would be expected for a book on ‘presentation’ written by an expert in this field, the design of the book is attractive and easily accessible to readers, even to those who might think the subject material rather ‘dry’. I am no expert in new technology but I found the text quite accessible, and there are lots of illustrations. The nub of the argument is that speakers should try to become part of the audience as far as they can rather than staying aloof. Make your talk a story as far as you can. The text is all in non-technical language and there is a useful Index at the end, with a handful of suggestions for further reading. After reading this book, I cannot envisage a situation where I would feel a need to explore this subject further.
What the book does particularly well is to break down the presentation process into easily understood stages. Readers may agree or disagree with the many different aspects of the presentation 'formula' covered in the book but I'm sure that any reader would benefit from the way in which the author challenges the 'status quo' - it certainly made me think twice about my own approach to presentations!
I liked the way that the content was written as a story (not surprising really as 'the story' is identified as a key ingredient of any presentation!). As I said earlier, this makes the book easy to read but being harsh, this is also a slight criticism (and the reason for not giving 5 stars). For me, the book would not work as a reference book for presentations unless you'd read the whole story first. If you try and dip into different sections at different times without having read the whole book, I'm not sure the content would make as much sense, or have as much impact.
Nevertheless, in my opinion this book is a rare beast - a business book that was enjoyable to read, instructive and made me think!
