The sound is miles better than the House of Yes CD from a few years ago, Steve Howe is playing better than I have ever heard him, Oliver Wakeman proves to be a real chip off the old block, and its the only chance to hear tracks from Drama played live as far as I know.
The vocals are the only problem because you can't help comparing them but in truth Benoit David does a difficult job very well. I have a lot of sympathy for him: if he tries to put in any sort of flourishes it will be assumed that he tried to copy Jon and failed, but if he doesn't then its going to be a soulless exercise.
I think he pulls it off, and it does help that the rest of the band are at the top of their game.
The whole thing is beautifully packaged and has 2 hours of music on 2 CDs plus nearly an hour on DVD.
It also passes the acid test of a live album: do I wish I had been there in Lyon in 2009? Yes I do.
Good points: 1) Like many Yes fans, I must have multiple versions of the same songs. This album does have appreciably different interpretations of the classics, which are good and still very tight (not like the butchering that some bands perpetrate live). Often the difference is to slow the tempo down and treat the songs to a more sedate and elegant interprtation (see later).
2) Their excellent sound system on tour gives us a recording comparable to the studio. Also when at a live gig, although loud, you can actually hear when you leave (due to the lack of distortion),
3) The present line-up works fine - be reassured.
Bad points: The lack of tempo and energy, bemoaned by other reviewers. Fair enough - but as I already own recordings of electrifying YES concerts (think America in the 70s and Keys), I can listen to them. I don't want to pay for the same each time I buy a live YES album. If I'd actually been there, I'd have preferred the up-beat performances of the past.
Finally, who should buy this? - definately the older fans. If you are new to Yes, buy the older live albums first. But if you've already been there, try this fresh take on the classics.

What happened to this band and why did no one point out how languid this performance is? Surely in rehearsal SOMEONE must have thought "Hold on, this is really awful". Read morePublished on 22 Feb. 2012 by musical-river
