Peter Kinderman is professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Liverpool. He was twice elected Chair of the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology; from 2004 to 2005, and again from 2010-2011. In that role, he worked with the UK Department of Health, the BBC, the Health Professions Council, the European Union Fundamental Rights Agency and the UK Office for National Statistics, amongst others.

A psychologist who believes that, in terms of mental health, psychology should have the primacy where currently psychiatry holds that position. He may well be right. The arguments in the book are well detailed, well written, and easy to digest. I felt, though, that each could have been better expanded, with greater attention given to implications and consequences for the patient. I also felt the book could have benefited from a discourse on the ethical arguments around both psychology and psychiatry practice, not to mention the responsibilities of society towards one of its most vulnerable groups of people. I felt the author could have handled this beautifully, and has missed an opportunity. I am not sure why so many health professionals state a clear concern for those experiencing mental distress, noting the causative nature of social factors, yet few of them actually do much to change those same circumstances, nor to suggest what can be done. It's a bit like "I find it easier to stick to theory so I'll leave the hard work to others"). Is this an abdication of a duty of care. How long can we continue to turn a blind eye to the need for social change, while continuing to secure a guaranteed cohort of future clients.

This book discusses everything that frustrates me about current mental health services in the UK, and offers a very clever alternative. It was validating to read this book as it helps you know you're not the only mental health practitioner who thinks our services are failing our clients. We work in a heavily stretched system that is under resourced (NHS) , using a model (medical) that does not work. It doesn't bode well, something has to change. And I think this book offers that change. Well worth reading
