If you are expecting Skull Ring or The Stooges, don't buy this. And don't bitch about it either. If that's what you want to hear, just put those albums on and be happy there's so much of it. It's about time we heard more of the other side of Iggy Pop... the part where he can write intelligent lyrics and back it up with strong musical content.

Preliminaires was written, and in some cases, sung for the French, where Iggy has his biggest following. Pre-release hype claimed it be Iggy's first jazz album. Well, yes, there's Euro jazz here, but there's also plenty of rock and lots of acoustic work too. And perhaps most importantly, some of the most unusual lyrics ever recorded: premeditated, yet sounding completely spontaneous as the finished product.

No, this is not The Stooges or Skull Ring... this is utterly different material for Iggy Pop. Listen to the samples to get an idea. It will give you the gist, but remember, those are 30 second excerpts that do not give you the complete picture. Listening to the complete tracks in complete album form leaves you wanting for more in the future and wondering why a project as great as this was not done sooner.

It's very short; clocking in at 36 minutes with flimsy packaging. This is reflected in how inexpensive it is. But that does not deminish the overall impact of this most different of Iggy Pop releases, something I hope there will be more of in the future. Highly recommended to those who can appreciate ALL the talent that Iggy Pop has... this man is no one-trick-dog.

Despite sometimes playing along with the public perception of him Iggy Pop has always had a bit more about him than just being a cartoon-like punk figure. And after getting fed up with the monotonous nature of hard rock he decided to put out this cultured, somewhat morbid and cosmopolitan record.

Anyone expecting thrashing, Stooges-like aggression will be shocked - the only heavier number here is "Nice To Be Dead", and even that contains a certain reflective quality. And it's this introspection which characterises the recording - from the French-language number which tops and tails the album, the New Orleans jazz number "King Of The Dogs" - a departure surely no-one expected from Iggy - the haunting riffs, brooding meditations on mortality and the loyalty of dogs (!) make this a different beast to anything he's recorded. Even the bass and distorted electronics of the party number "Party Time", and Ig's cynical lyrics, make it a very different song to anything on the life-loving "Party".

Worth a spin for anyone looking for something different.

It was a brave move for Iggy to step out of the shadow of his past and try something so completely different.

The opening track has the feel of something Serge Gainsbourg could have written and this sets the scene for an album that has the atmosphere and mood of a small French music hall cabaret production.

the album is sung in both French and English and his style is laid back and easy going. Surprisingly, his voice suits this sort of music and as an experiment, the project works well.

The album comes in under 40 minutes in length.

Iggy's voice is perfect for French, very seductive, this is a great album and different to his usual styles, having said that, he doesn't really have any one style as I am learning, there's more than one Iggy for each decade. Listen to his BBC radio 6 program to learn more!

excellent , probably closer to Iggy's true musical inspiration at present , rather than churning out rehashed stooge rebel screams of his youth for the kids , still a rebel but an intelligent , introspective rebel with dry wit , and sure he's right , were all fu......d

Looks as tho' Iggy's grown up, this album was a total surprise, a very pleasant one, albeit a bit short so deduct half a star if possible.
