5.0 out of 5 stars "deeply moving scores for nine DEKALOG stories" 25 Nov. 2001
By J. Lovins - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
One only needs to hear a Preisner score and know he is a master and a genius in bringing music to the screen, with results that are melodic and classical in subject matter...with a need to always take the audience on this journey that never seems to end...our musical friend from Poland, Zbigniew Preisner gives the story-line a whole new perspective, music becomes another character in the film.
From writer/director Krzysztof Kieslowski, with writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz and performed by The Symphonic Orchestra of Katowice, Zdzislaw Szostak is conductor...featuring the talents of Michal Poltorak(violin)...Konrad Mastylo(piano)...Andrzej Modzejewski(guitar)...Jacek Ostaszewski(recorder) and the beautiful soprano voice of Elzbieta Towarnicka...as Preisner develops each cue to the screenplay...from various aspects initially mesmerizing, serene, haunting and dark in counter-balance due to mood and tone of the films storyboard.
Follow each character through the eyes of composer Preisner, as Silva Screen Classics gives us another glimpse of the power and majesty of this GREAT COMPOSER ~ ZBIGNIEW PREISNER!

5.0 out of 5 stars haunting and nostalgic mood music 15 Dec. 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Listening to this CD this afternoon, I felt compelled to write my first review. I found it unexpectedly while browsing, and the cover reminded me of the somber intensity of Kieslowski's Dekalog. On first listen, I found it to be exactly what I expected and hoped for. It is an interesting mix of classical form and vernacular styles. I easily imagine a lonely, overcast Warsaw Sunday afternoon. The melodies have a power to transport one to a place of longing and loss, a trip that may be slightly disturbing, but all the more valuable for it. It is rare to find music that can bring up such lucid emotions, allowing one to visit them from time to time without having to live them. It is good music to listen to while partially sleeping, which is currently part of my requirement for a 5 star piece of music. I have since purchased three other Preisner soundtracks, but none have the consistent good quality of this one.
