The writer's style is quite informal, which makes the book less daunting than it could be otherwise. As an introduction, it covers, in archaeological terms, a significant period of British and, less fully, Irish history. I felt I gained a reasonable grounding in the principal styles and periods covered. Some aspects were quite fascinating, e.g. the absence of representational depictions on the pottery concerned throughout several millennia. (The contrast with any study of ancient Egyptian pottery is quite stark.)
I couldn't get as excited about the subject matter in the manner the writer evidently hopes will happen. However, that's probably my limitation, not his. I would definitely recommend this as a good introduction.
This book can be quite technical, however as a lay person I understood it easily, and I hope that if I found some ancient pottery I may be able to identify it!!
I recommend this book as it talks about not only the pottery but the firing skills and how the clay was mixed in different areas.
Essential reading for the ameteur archaeologist.
