About the Author

Counting conservatively, this is Conrad Carlberg’s eleventh book about quantitative analysis using Microsoft Excel, which he still regards with a mix of awe and exasperation. A look back at the “About the Author” paragraph in Carlberg’s first book, published in 1995, shows that the only word that remains accurate is “He.” Scary.

An exceptional book, well written and good attention to both theory and practice. An enjoyable read following the Excel template examples which actually work. Some minor error and admissions in the examples but nothing that cannot be fixed or sort elsewhere. Good overall explanations of the subject, sensibly written for both novice and professional. I have now purchased the Excel 2010 version by the same author and I am expecting more good fun in this statistical predictive area. The final point I would make is that once the basics are seen to work and the basics are cleverly explained, one can then pursue more advanced texts outside of using Excel such as the fun time one can have with R to provide similar predictive statistical analysis. Very pleased with this book and good value for cash. Well done Conrad.

Carlberg's book has ten well written chapters that cover the techniques of Correlation, Regression, Moving Averages, Forecasting, Principal Component Analysis, Arima Modelling and Varimax Factor Rotation. Each chapter is accompanied with an illustrative excel workbook that makes understanding much simpler and quicker. Chapter One is an exception to this because although the VBA code is provided, the excel workbook is not included, so I did not quite succeed in the aims of the author. However he uses some very neat and powerful techniques in this first chapter. The external data grabber is used select tables from a web site and is pasted into the excel sheet. VBA code is then used to find a particular string of characters and extract the Amazon ranking of an author's book every hour. From the changing ranks over time, it is then possible to estimate the number of books sold in the day. The problem is that the accompanying excel workbook to this chapter is not available, so I could not get this to work. Rather frustrating, but the book is logically written in clear language with sometimes too much detail; for example, a reader of this book really does not need to be told how to copy and paste in such great detail. This book succeeds in its aims in the predictive analysis of data.

I can't remember ever writing a review about anything I have purchased on Amazon ( something I have been doing for years now). But this book is an exception! It is the best statistics and predictive analytics material I have ever laid my hands on. A great read with fantastic explanations and demonstration of not only the concepts, but their underlying background behind them. Thanks Conrad for such a great piece!
