"
"""As a long-time compound shooter I was surprised to find myself intrigued with portions of this book aimed at recurve shooters. It was fascinating and insightful to learn some new perspectives, which I am sure I will put to use when playing with my recurve."
Michelle Ragsdale
Pro archer since 1978

Precision Archery is a great grab-bag of hints and tips for the intermediate level archer. It is a distilation of the wisdom contained within Archery Focus Magazine.
There are 14 chapters which cover numerous different aspects of the sport from advanced recurve form to the best way to test new equipment. It tries to provide a good balance between recurve and compound shooting, and on the whole it does maintain that balance.
Some of the chapters may not be totally applicable to you, if for instance you shoot recurve you may not wish to read about tuning compounds - however don't be so sure for that particular chapter had one of the clearest explainations of how fletchings work that I have ever encountered.
Every intermediate archery should either buy this book or should pester their club into buying it for them.

Another US book aimed mainly at recurve and compound bow users. (I'm more interested in longbows).
There are some excellent explanations as to how some methods are better than others but the explanations are uneven- some easy to follow - some need a diagram which is sometimes forthcoming in a different part of the book. Many of the points are made over and over again so it can appear a little too wordy and repetitive. It needs a good editor to whittle away some of the chaff and a bullet-pointed summary at the end of each chapter would be useful. This has the makings of a good book; a pity at times I was only reading the second draft. Nevertheless I would recommend it to intermediate recurve and compound archers.

I am relatively new to the sport and have been having a persistent problem with my shooting, after endless advice from well meaning members of the club, I was still not improving, it would seem that I would clear up one problem only to find another. I have always liked reading around a subject with the objective of gaining information from those who are experts in their field, it is often difficult to find reliable information however, many books dealing with the "basics" or are poorly written. Not so here. "Precision Archery" has proven a first rate buy and has been written for everybody, regardless of experience, in an informative and detailed way, by authors who clearly know the subject and have the ability to explain even the most complex procedures in a way that is easy to visualise. As it's name implies the objective is to show you how to improve your accuracy and develop consistent scoring. The book takes you through the basic stance, positioning, dynamics and relationship of various muscles involved with drawing the arrow, to complex tuning of your equipment and workout regimes to develop your strength. Another interesting aspect is the section on Psychology and dealing with the destructive elements of negative thoughts we all experience when shooting badly. This book should be mandatory reading for all those interested in practical archery and looking to do more than just hit the target! By the way after just 30 minutes of reading I have identified several things that could be contributing to my own shooting difficulties. Highly recommended.

This is not a book for beginners. It doesn’t suggest that it is, but if you are a beginner and feel tempted, leave this one until you have a bit more experience. I’ve only been shooting recurve for two and a half years and I experienced a lot of resistance to some of the ideas suggested in this book – simply because they were different from the way I’d been taught to shoot. It’s not that the there’s anything wrong with what the book is suggesting, after all it has contributions from champions like Rick McKinney who surely know vastly more about shooting arrows than I do. Let me give you an example. I’ve been taught to pull the bow back to anchor, string on my nose and chin and tab firmly pressed against my jaw. Hold this position, sight and loose. The advice in this book is that shooting is a continuous movement with no stopping at anchor. This of course makes it much easier to shoot because you don’t have to hold on to the weight of the bow at full draw. I was on the target range last night and thought I’d give it a go. In practice it didn’t work for me because when the string touched my face it wouldn't go any further. This created frustration and rapid abandonment of this new idea. This is the problem with new versus familiar and comfortable, it takes a lot of effort and determination to make the changes.
That’s exactly what this book is about, making those changes that will shift you from an average archer to a competition winning archer, if that’s what you want. Steve Ruis and Claudia Stevenson are the editors of this archery manual. The content is a series of collected articles that have been previously published in Archery Focus Magazine. There is a US flavour to the contents and it covers Compound as well as Recurve.
