About the Author

Carmel Shalev has a doctoral degree from Yale Law School. Her professional and academic work has focused on women's rights, human and health rights, and the bioethics of medicalreproduction and end-of-life care, and she has published two books and dozens of articles on these subjects. Since the 1990s she has been practising meditation and studying the dharma, and she is as a founder of Wisdom of Aging, a movement for conscious ageing with a Buddhist worldview.

The world has changed. Elders were revered in other societies and in previous times. The author invites us to embrace this significant part of our lives with dignity. She invites us to reclaim the importance of this role. She does not shy away from using her personal experiences of loneliness, vulnerability, regret, loss of identity or physical illness. And from this honest position she brings the insights from her diverse life and study of Buddhism to encourage us to a attend to the freedoms we still have as we age – how we speak, how we act, how we feel. By being attentive to how things are, which is indistinguishable from love for ourselves and others allows us to “meet what is to come with an open heart.”

A good book on ageing

This is one of the better books on ageing I've read. It comes from a secular Buddhist perspective, which might unnecessarily diminish the appeal for most potential readers, though it really doesn't need any knowledge of Buddhism (in fact there's little to no reference to the actual teaching).
It doesn't really get to grips with the physical, mental and practical problems of ageing, particularly when faced by people (the large majority) with limited financial resources. But it's a strong, inspiring read.
