1 - The number of questions is small
2 - The questions are too easy even for what is billed as the most complex section.
3 - The explanations do not actually help that much, particularly as the answer is or isn't in the text. In real tests, the situation is more complex and in many cases you have to cross match information from different paragraphs.
Here are my comments on the book:
1 - The author makes a distinction between verbal comprehension, verbal reasoning and verbal critical reasoning. Yet when you look at the exercises, there isn't that much difference at all. This is just a gimmick to make the book look like more than what it actually is.
2 - Most of the exercises are actually too simple compared to what you would find in real tests. For example in many real tests, you have to cross match information from several paragraphs to come up with an answer. In this book, the vast majority of the answers are based on one line in the text. This makes the exercises too easy and certainly one would have expected the critical reasoning exercises to be far more complex than they are.
3 - The author was lazy in his approach. At one stage he states: "These practice questions are equivalent to those in real verbal critical reasoning tests except that in the real test there would be more verbal information..." So that is NOT equivalent then, is it! The texts should be far longer and more complex.
4 - The book contains only about 115 practice questions. That is peanuts.
The low number of questions, combined with the low level of difficulty means that you can use this book as no more than an introduction to verbal reasoning.
On the plus side, the explanations are reasonably good, but no more than you would find for free online.
Starting with the good points, the early chapters explaining what the tests are for, how they are conducted, and test-taking strategies are fairly useful if you aren't already in the possession of a test-taking skill set (I am certainly not anymore!). However, for those of you at universities, I dare say you could get this information from your careers service.
The final chapters, what happens after and the "why you shouldn't cheat" section are also quite useful if you're unfamiliar with these tests.
There are also a good number of examples for you to practice with.
However, this is where I am having doubts. The biggest issue is that in the verbal critical reasoning tests (the hardest, and for me, most important) there is an actual mistake in the statement we are asked to evaluate, in that the 'question' statement is different to the 'answer' statement on the following page. So how am I meant to know which is the correct option? If the wording of the 'answer' statement was used in the 'question' I would have chosen a different option.
There are also a few spelling mistakes and silly typos in the book that lead me to question its accuracy overall and the attention to detail it was given by the author and/ or publisher.
In summary, yes it is useful, and cheap (thankfully!) but take the answers with a pinch of salt and try to develop your own sense of reasoning rather than rely on the information in the book. The strategies and advice given is good, but for the tests there are test-taking websites out there that offer some free practices, and for graduates, your University careers service may help you too.
