Product Description

Review

"Wilder's diary is a rich text for historians of the Civil War, black troops, medicine, the South, race, and the history of American natural science. It includes detailed information on Civil War medicine, on the day-to-day experiences of a white officer in a black regiment, on the black troops themselves, and the innumerable issues (fatigue labor versus combat, discrimination in terms of equipment, pay, status, medical care) that defined life for the men of the U.S. Colored Troops. Wilder's is an important voice that needs to be heard by a broad range of scholars and students of Civil War and late nineteenth-century America." - John David Smith, editor of Black Soldiers in Blue: African American Troops in the Civil War Era"

HASH(0x9212a2b8) out of 5 stars Offers an unusual record key to any in-depth Civil War library 15 Jan. 2011
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Practicing Medicine in a Black Regiment: The Civil War Diary of Burt G. Wilder, 55th Massachusetts follows an era when Massachusetts began recruiting black soldier to serve in the Civil War. Burt Green Wilder, a Harvard-educated doctor-in-training, was among the first white officers commissioned to staff the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and for several years recorded his experiences in a diary. This presentation documents biased treatment and differences in treatment between black and white troops, and offers an unusual record key to any in-depth Civil War library.
