Product Description

From the Back Cover

Practical Visual Basic 6 takes a straight forward, no-nonsense approach to teaching Visual Basic programming. The book is broken into five sections. You begin by learning the fundamentals of Visual Basic programming and how to work within the programming environment. You then move on to general programming fundamentals and using those concepts and techniques in the real world. The final sections of the book move you on to database programming and advanced concepts such as making reports, using the data control, and debugging your applications.

I found this a very readable book, and in fact read it cover to cover inside two days. Whilst I had previously programmed in a small way in Visual Basic and therefore was not entirely unfamiliar with the concepts, I felt that the book dealt in an easy to understand manner with a number of complex issues. I disagree that it is only for database programmers, as the sections in the book on database programming were in fact pretty short. I only noticed these reviews when I recommended the book to a friend, and he pointed them out to me. In short, if you want a thorough grounding that will give you sufficient knowledge to understand MSDN documentation, then I can recommend it. Having now used VB for a complex project, I am of the opinion that a single book on the subject that covers everything in huge detail would be simply unmanageable, and unncessary because of the plethora of other sources of help. This book gives you an introduction that will allow you to understand the online documentation.

I wish I had seen this before I wasted my money. To the beginner it contains too much theory and not enough practical examples.

I am an experianced programmer, however when I bought this book I was looking for something that was readable and gave details on some of the 'obvious' things in VB. i.e. I find it irritating that I can be stuck with something 'easy' in a language but finding it in a wealth of complex examples can be soul destroying.
This book was readable and had some good straight forward descriptions and references for VB. At the time I was not familiar with VB, however knew what I needed to program i.e. the complex bits of coding. This book provided some easy to find language references that allowed me to work on the problem in hand rather than wrestle with VB itself.
Dont dismiss this book its certainly worth a look.

This book is good if you are using an Access Database. However, Access is the only database platform it covers. SQL, Sybase, Oracle etc are not even mentioned!
If you want to use ActiveX with any other databases, - Don't buy this book!
A general idea of Visual Basic is given, But no more.
