By Parka HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 4 Jun. 2014
Format: Paperback
Length: 1:46 Mins
This is a large 240 page paperback. It's quite an enjoyable and informative book that covers many different topics on colours. And it has both theory and tutorials, and lots of nice pictures.

Each 2-page spread talks about a certain aspect of colour. Some of the topics included are the colour wheel, various colour schemes, various colours separately, colouring mixing, painting techniques, and tutorials on painting different subjects like sky, water, shadow, emotive aspect, and more.

The several tutorials included are on different medium, coloured pencils, oil, watercolour, etc.

In terms of depth, it cannot match books that cover specific topics, maybe such as colour schemes. But the variety of topics included makes this book a nice resource, a beginner's guide to what colour has to offer, and the different techniques available to explore.

Recommended to beginners and intermediate artists.

List of contents:
EXPLORING COLOR
Diagrams and Scales
Harmony and Chromatic Ranges
PIGMENTS AND PAINT
Introducing the Colors: The Starting Point
Mixing Colors on the Palette
Mixing Colors on the Paintings
CONSTRUCTING AN IMAGE WITH COLORS
Colors in the Composition
Interpreting Real Colors
BEING CREATIVE WITH COLORS
Color Communicates
A Foray into Abstraction
Experiments and Comparisons

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Handy Reference Guide 7 Feb. 2014
By Linda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Art has its own language. I think a good artist needs to be fluent in that language. This book will become a well used resource for the art student (do we ever stop learning?) There are many exercises for you to practice and strengthen your "art muscles". The exercises are not for finished paintings, but a way to better understand the language of color and its effects. There is quite a lot of information in 240 pages, and will benefit beginners or professional artists. Oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastels are explored. The only drawback is the brief descriptions with each topic, but then it would be too big and cumbersome. The topics are well illustrated.

I purchased this because I had seen the book from a local library. It would be helpful if there was a "Look Inside" option. The headings are: Exploring Color, Pigments and Paint, Constructing an Image with Colors, and Being Creative with Colors. There are close to 100 topics (The Importance of Color Ranges, Painting Alla Prima, Chromatic Patterns, Painting Water, Multicolor Approach, etc)

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, its a handy reference guide. 14 Feb. 2015

Very well organized guide to color. Yes, it would be great if this was posted with a "Look Inside" option, but maybe you can rely solely upon reviews. Its good for starters or those returning to art after a long absence. Author treats each color individually, as well as mixing them, how to lighten and darken them, and using them in washes, etc. I found it helpful that the authors chose to comment on various triads and two color palettes. Nothing really earth shattering in this book, but if you want a guide that is very well organized and accompanied by useful color combination illustrations, you wont go wrong with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Because of this book, I was inspired to read other Color theory books! 26 Aug. 2015

Great read. I'm going to keep and read it again. Valuable color theory and information. It made me want to read more into Color Theory, so I purchased other books. I would say this book got me started in painting and color education. Inspiring and easy to understand.
