The best tool I found to cut and pull out the grass was the serrated edge of the Gerber 31-000082 Gator Machete.
The machine would not cope with very thick clumpy dead grass and I would not expect it to really.
It has saved me some work. It works most efficiently on bare dry soil. It pulls itself forward so is semi-self propelling.
I found the on-off safety switch awkward to hold continuously in the on position whilst walking the machine and frequently had to let it go and re-grip it. The whole thing is a little awkward to drag around to where you want it as the rear wheels do not seem to be designed for that so I found myself often having to carry it from place to place. Its not too heavy to do this.
You must take care not to cut up the cable. This may have been better as bright orange instead of black.
A good design is the ability to unplug the feed cable at the handles. You then don't have to wrap the cable around the handles, like so many lawn mowers, and can store the cable separately.
Pros: the width of action and the number of tines is particularly good considering the price. The machine worked through a moderately hard thin layer of earth and with a forward and back approach could get down to the 20 cms level. The advantage of the wheels was especially obvious in this technique.
Cons: the power connection dangles about 40 cms below the handlebars which is a minor inconvenience. The bracket from the axle between the wheels to the main body of the machine appears to be a bit vulnerable.
All in all I would say good value.
