I must confess that I'm a hockey nut, have been ever since I saw my first game many years ago in Finland. So I was always going to be interested in a play which took the brilliantly theatrical game of hockey both as its theme and its setting. This is a skilful and original drama, which depicts the interaction of the central characters as a game of ice hockey, observing just how many relationships between men and women, men and men, have the imposition of (or the battle for) power at their heart.
Powerplay involves four men and two women, as well as the `Ref' who comments on the action in hockey terms. The play is written in a succession of small scenes, while the commentary illuminates them, seeing the interactions between the various characters as a kind of ritual battle, like the complicated set of tactics and rituals which lie at the heart of ice hockey - or of any game which is deeply embedded in a country or a community.
The drama is very good to read - moving, funny, shocking by turns - perhaps even more so if you have some knowledge of just how exciting a game of hockey can be - but it would be even better to see it in performance. The playwright specifies music and video projections, which take the audience through the game in parallel to the emotional and power games which are being played out on stage or - just possibly - on an ice rink somewhere. I wonder if any company out there might be brave enough to stage it? I wish they would!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Play About the Power Plays in LIFE 3 Dec. 2012
By Ingrid Ricks - Published on Amazon.com

This play is brilliant. Using an ice hockey game as the backdrop and metaphor, a referee as moderator and six players (including two females), the author weaves powerful off-the-ice story lines for each player that ultimately intertwine and remind us that in many ways, life is one big POWER PLAY. I would love to see this play performed.
