There are times when your mobile phone battery just doesn't last long enough. If you're away from a power source for a few days, you either need to ration your mobile phone use or just give up using it when it runs out. If, like me, you go to music festivals, you have the option of paying someone quite a lot of money to charge your phone, assuming you feel comfortable with leaving it with them. What you need is a portable charger of your own.

There are some phone chargers that take ordinary AA batteries, but of course they can cost a fortune in disposable batteries. The PowerGen, which was supplied to me for review by its Amazon distributor, is the first rechargeable portable charger I've seen, and it does away with all the disadvantages of other types of external chargers.

So, when you're planning to go away, you charge your phone and you also charge the PowerGen. It charges using a USB port in about 5 hours if you use a 1 Amp supply (it holds about 5.2 Amp hours). Most computer USB ports deliver less current, and so take longer to charge it, so it's best to use a mains-to-USB adapter, such as your Kindle, iPhone or iPad mains charging accessory. I use a 3 Pin 1000mA USB Power Adapter Mains Charger. The adapter supplied with the PowerGen is a flat 2-pin plug, which is not suitable for use in the UK without a travel adapter.

Now you have a charged PowerGen, whenever your phone starts running low on power, you plug in the PowerGen using another USB cable, press the charge button, and the power stored in the PowerGen charges your phone.

I was sent this to review.

This is the little brother of the PowerGen Mobile Juice Pack 8400mAh External Battery Pack. I'd recommend the larger one if you have room to carry it. This is far more useful if you've only got a small handbag, though (this one is the size of one of those small, basic Nokias from back in the day, whereas the larger one is the size of a pack of cards).

There's one charging socket - the bigger one has two. It takes a bit longer to charge things than the bigger one, and the amount of energy it can store is a bit less too (about 60%): I got 2.5 charges on my Blackberry on this, compared to 4 with the biggie. Both have a useful flashlight function (press the power button twice).

The power button is larger and in a more convenient place than on the bigger one (worth knowing if you have arthritic conditions etc).

So - for the money I'd choose the bigger one, but only if you've got the space. These external chargers are great for using at festivals or for when camping. My phone ran out of power at Glastonbury last year, which really sucked! This would have saved the day.

It comes with a US plug only (no Mains Adaptor supplied), and the universal adapter kit includes one of the old Sony two pin sockets, which strangely the big one doesn't. There is no DS adapter. PSP is included, as is every other option I could think of.

I'd like to see a bag included - there are lots of bits and pieces that will easily get lost.

Edit 04/10/12: I have to mention the low quality of the universal pin heads - they bend really easily out of shape, and become unreliable very quickly. Plan to use the cable that came with the phone.

Bought this for my Wildfire S for extended battery life, as using some apps can drain the phones power in no time. Was planning to use it when travelling to minimise the boredome of rail, airports etc...
The unit came quick. It is compact, slim and easy to use with lots of plugs not only for phones but for other devices as well.

First use went great, the phone went from flat to fully charged in no time.

Decided to trial the device to see how it performs. So far I was only able to charge my phone's battery (1230mhA) only 2.5 times before the device appears drained, which indicates about 3000mhA and not 5200mhA capacity. To be fair, I have not tested properly and I have been using my phone while charging, however I think the phone use would warrant additional 500mhA adjustment and not 1000mhA. Therefore, the total capacity of the device appears to be about 3500-4000mhA rather then the advertised 5200mhA.

Furthermore, I don't know enough about these battery devices charge. It is possible that when the device has low power and the phone is full the electrical charge just doesn't flow. (perhaps someone can comment on this). Perhaps then there are 500mhA or so that are "hidden" in the device that can be tapped then the phone battery is very low.

One other things I've noticed: When the device is "off", if you look closely you can see a very dim blue light blinking. Not sure if this is how it is supposed to be or whether this is a manufacturing fault.

Despite all of the above, I still give it 5 stars. The divice feels quality made, with lots of plugs, and will be a life saver on those long boring joirneys. Don't expect any battery on the market to give you the advertised Amps, and for me the 3500-4000mhA of the power I can sqeeze out of this device is more then sufficient.
