Better than I expected

I bought this product after I lost my previous Powerbee solar charger (Executive Solar charger). It is smaller and lighter and cheaper than my previous one, and therefore much nicer to slip into a handbag. It has a less powerful battery, but I only really want it to get me through if my phone battery fails. If you want more power, pay a bit more and get the Executive model.
The Compact can completely charge my Samsung phone or partly charge my Samsung tablet. Lack of sunshine is not an issue, as you can charge it via USB. Very handy when I go into London for the day, when my phone sometimes gets low towards the end of the day. A good value product.

OK affordable option

I bought this to use on a trip to the Peruvian Andes, primarily for charging my iPod Touch. The charger comes with a good selection of adapters, including a USB socket so that even if your MP3 player, etc. doesn't match the supplied adapter you can still charge using your normal cable.

The charger is very light and comes with a useful carry pouch so it is easy to stow away and doesn't weigh you down. However, despite the pouch having a belt loop to attach to a strap, there is no window in it so cannot charge. In order to charge on the go you will have to hold the thing in your hand or rig up some DIY mounting kit (e.g. self-adhesive velcro onto the back).

I found the internal battery most useful as this seems to hold a decent amount of charge and can be charged easily enough from any USB adapter plug/PC (albeit, takes a while). The solar charging is incredibly slow (several hours in high-altitude direct sunlight amounted to about 5 minutes-worth of charging on my iPod), but it can just about keep you going. I have since left the charger on my window sill in the UK to test it out and it didn't reach full charge even after a full week.

The most annoying thing was that I attempted to charge my camera via the USB adapter with miserable results. Despite the camera battery only being 5 volts (the same as an iPod) and the charging light flashing as normal, the charger seemingly delivers too low current with the net result that both the camera and the charger were completely drained following a night of "charging". Bit frustrating to be left without a usable camera for the rest of the trip! To be fair, it doesn't advertise camera charging but for any duty I would advise checking what works and what doesn't from the safety of home.

Overall then I'd say this is an ok affordable option if all you need to do is keep phones, MP3 players topped up for a few days in the wild. For any serious charging requirements you would do better to look at the larger, pricier alternatives.

Confusing instructions and lack of Power to charge.

First off the instructions - they've obviously been put through Google translate or BableFish. My feeling is that they were already confusing before this, but the poor translation hasn't helped. I ended up phoning PowerBee UK, who were very helpful. I wonder why there isn't a set of propery translated instructions on their website? I charged the Elite overnight from my home PC - following this I charged my depleated Samsung S4 without problem - Job's a gud-un...

The second problem occurs when trying to charge from sunlight: it doesn't! I had this on the dashboard of my car for 3 days in glorious sunshine, in which time it only charged to 1 bar (of 3) which, when plugged in to my S4 only charged it for about 2 minutes before it turned itself off. It doesn't do what it says on the tin...

Build quality is ok if not a bit plasticy and leightweight. The USB socket cover snapped off in the first week, but this doesn't affect operation.

I'll still use it to charge my phone at work but will do a weekly 'home charge'.

A good mobile solar charger

I will keep it short and sweet.

The charger is a nice and small, well built piece of equipment and comes together with a pouch. I used it on a camping holiday. It works well in sunshine but no charging on a cloudy day. I used it for my iphone 3Gs. It came with several other connector types for other mobiles and mobile dvd players.

I have yet to try the ".....fully charged internal battery from 12 hours of sunshine holding charge for 4 months....." statement.

Other than that I am happy to recommend this product to anyone.

Very disappointing

Having purchased some PowerBee solar fairy lights a few years ago I had high expectations of the solar phone charger. The flower lights have always charged extremely well and have always worked well. The same cannot be said of the phone charger.

I've just returned from a week's camping trip in the south of France - the weather was amazing.

The charger came with attachments for my cell phones. Perfect. The charger came in a fairly solid little pouch. Super. The charger didn't come with any kind of hanging clip. Not so great, but one can work around it.

Sooo

Day 1: the charger was left out in the sunshine for several hours. The charger was plugged into phone 1 overnight. The phone gained 1 bar in 12 hours... and it's only an old Samsung, not a fancy iphone.

Day 2: the charger was left out in the sunshine for several hours. The charger was plugged into phone 1 overnight again. The phone recognised that the charger had been plugged in but no charge was gained in 12 hours.

Day 3: the charger was left out in the sunshine for several hours. The charger was plugged into phone 2 (the most basic old fashioned flip top phone ever) overnight. No charge gained in 12 hours.

Day 4: the charger was left out in the sunshine for several hours, with phone 1 plugged into it. No charge gained in several hours.

I was relying on at least 1 phone to help me meet my ride home at the end of my trip. Thankfully, the 1 bar gained on phone 1 at the start of the trip was just enough to see me through.

It's very disappointing as the solar panel, in my opinion, is perfectly adequate for the job - for my phones at least. I can understand it struggling with iphones.

I reckon it'll be a while before solar power gadgets for phones/laptops improve sufficiently. I guess the technology may already exist but it would possibly come at a much higher price than affordable gadgets such as this.
