This is the fourth and best recording of the Gloria to come my way; the others were Dutoit, Davis (live) and Layton; of those, only Dutoit was coupled with the Stabat Mater. The Chandos booklet mentions Poulenc regarded these as being part of a successful trilogy with his Tenebrae Responses. Too bad they're not included here.

Anyway, spacious stereo sound, lively but not OTT direction, and a happy choice of soprano soloist, way better for my ears than Dutoit's lady. The Stabat is a far less immediate piece but this is the more engaging version that I've heard and I look forward to giving it more time to sink in. Szymanowski's Stabat remains my favourite reponse to this tragic poem: Dvorak's endless dirge my least favourite.

I strongly recommend this Chandos CD to anyone seeking an idiomatic and enthusiastic collection of Poulenc's accompanied choral music. It was in religious music that he was at his most sincere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poulenc and Chandos: nice combination 10 Mar. 2014
By Eric S. Kim - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Since this is my first exposure to Poulenc's music, I can't say that I know much about his life and his works. All I can say is that his two choral compositions, which are featured on this Chandos CD, are pretty intriguing from start to finish. Gloria and Stabat Mater are neo-classical choral compositions: a mix of modern style and baroque/classical orchestrations. Gloria has more intense moments, while Stabat Mater feels like a lyrical Mahlerian testament to 20th century classical music. Janice Watson, the BBC Singers, and the BBC Philharmonic are fantastic. Maestro Yan Pascal Tortelier handles the music quite well with his straightforward conducting (at least it SOUNDS like it's straightforward).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great version...interesting music!!! 3 Jan. 2014

Poulenc is one of the most important French composers of the 20th century. We can see here two beautiful and interesting sacred compositions of the great master. Works of interesting instrumentation where the soloists and the choir are juxtaposed in a colorful musical. Soprano Janice Watson interprets their interventions with a beautiful vocal timbre and excellent interpretation. Tortelier, the conductor, in charge of the BBC Philharmonic always excellent. A very good cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poulenc's Gloria/Stabat Mater is rewarding for hardcore fans 22 July 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I enjoyed this version of Poulenc's Gloria/Stabat Mater and would recomend it for all those looking for a stellar and rewarding performance from the choir, soloist, and conductor. However, let me say that the Gloria is indeed a piece in which all will instantly become attracted to it's upbeat and somber atmosphere. Yet, I'm not sure whether casual classical music fans will enjoy the Stabat Mater quite as much. For the Stabat Mater is quite a bit more somber with not as much upbeat music as the Gloria. Poulenc just couldnt seem to quite get it up to the level of his Gloria. This having been said though, I think that after listening to the Stabat Mater for a while, you might eventually take to it. My one really picky thing is I wished the opening "Gloria" was a bit faster. Oh well, if you intend to get a version of Poulenc's great chorus/orchestra pieces, this is one of the CD's to buy.
