Product description

Review

"This updated edition of the classic by Leach (British potter and teacher) belongs on every ceramist s bookshelf. Minor text changes, a look at Leach s impact on the West, and numerous color photographs make this an even more valuable resource than the 1940 original. At an early age, Leach was inspired by Chinese and Japanese folk pottery and aesthetics. His subsequent writing and teaching had a profound impact on how ceramics was taught and produced. Leach s influence can still be seen in countless American and European pottery studios, where Japanese-inspired forms and glazes are reduction fired to produce functional stoneware and porcelain vessels. A survey of ceramic history includes a look at raku, English slipware, stoneware, and porcelain. Diverse ceramic developments around the world are further incorporated into the subsequent chapters, which discuss the preparation and use of low and high-fire clays, vessel construction (e.g., hand-building, throwing, and the use of molds), decoration (e.g., raw clay treatments and methods of mixing and applying slips and glazes), updraft and downdraft kilns (e.g., construction, loading, and firing), and setting up and operating a pottery studio. A glossary of terms and temperature charts are included." --C. A. Ventura, Tennessee Technological University

About the Author

Bernard Howell Leach (1887 1979) was a British studio potter and art teacher. He was born in Hong Kong and spent a long time living and potting in Japan, where he learnt the raku style of pottery. On his return to England, he founded the Leach Pottery in St Ives, and went on to teach some of the most celebrated ceramicists of the 20th century.
