I do think that potatoes could be used to undertake a regular fast however. With a baked potati being 100-200 calories depending upon size, you could have them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and consume 400-600 calories in a day, which is a good amount for a fast. They could also be used to key your daily calorie intake down, if for example you are going out for dinner and know you will be eating a lot.
The most dubious recommendation is to eat raw potatoes, as a source of resistant starch, which is great for your gut bacteria. I did try this for a few days, but besides being tasteless and not a great texture for munching on, a quick online search will reveal the risks of eating raw potatoes. I didn't suffer any ill effects, but I think I'll give this a miss from now on!
In summary, I feel that what this book advocates is a bit extreme, and extreme eating patterns are never a good thing. Eat just a potato every now and again because you like them and because they help to keep your daily calorie intake down, but don't plan on living off them for a large part of your life!
I thank the author for his sensible, convincing, thorough and amusing book. Buy the book. Read the book. Try the potato hack for just 3 days and see how good you feel and look.
Try this, if it suits your body as it does mine you won't regret it. I can't believe how quickly this has had an effect on me and only wish I'd found it twenty years ago!
